NO, NO… NOT THAT BASEMENT

Finally! Another house in Nashville has stepped up to the plate and decided to start doing some shows!! Everyone, please welcome The Other Basement to the game. Their first show went down last week with Heavy Cream and Vacation and we gotta say — pretty sick for a first show. They’re upping it this weekend with a killer show featuring two bands we haven’t gotten to see in a good bit [Natural Child just got back from their tour with Gentleman Jesse and The Strange Boys — they’re heading out soon again though for that VICE/Scion show and a west coast tour. S.N.O.D. haven’t been playing out as much lately but we heard that’s because all the members got thrown in jail and they killed some people in jail and the jail thought they were so hard that they just had to let them back out. Ruff ryderz] Anyways, come out this weekend and get your kicks.

CALL 'EM LIKE YOU SEE 'EM

Photo by Bekah Cope

One of our favorite Nashville musicians just got some love thrown their way from the bad boys over at WFMU — and rightfully so. William Tyler [more commonly Willy T] has been keeping things in Nashville interesting for as long as we can remember and has had his hand in just about anything good that’s come out of here in the last decade. I mean… Sebastian Speaks, Vine Ridge House, Silver Jews, Lambchop, Paper Hats, Tim Chad & Sherry, one of our favorite blogs, one of our favorite DJs, we saw him play with Festival and Sigmund’s Mind Music before, one of our favorite people in general…  the guy is killing it on all fronts. He’s not stopping anytime soon either — his latest record is coming out in about a month on Tompkins Square. Head on over to the WFMU blog to read what Willy had to say about lots of different records he’s helped on and then give him a call and tell him how much he rules.

Willy’s new record comes out Noveber 23rd. William Tyler for Mayor

HEY DADDY-O ||| COOL DADDY-O

You may think of them as the too-posh-to-mosh house band in Kill Bill, or you may think of them as the soul-suckers behind the impossibly catchy song used for an entire Vonage ad campaign. Don’t be mistaken though, the 5.6.7.8’s have more piss and vinegar rock and roll in them than you or I will EVER be able to muster. And let’s be frank, those babes are B A B E S. [Seriously, watch this video. Oh my god…] Word just came in today that Third Man is reissuing their self-titled debut, and luckily for us, they’re flying those Japanese heartbreakers to our great land to play at Third Man HQ on Friday. We’ve had the privilege to see a copy of the reissue already, and sweet Jesus it looks sick. From the gold lettering to the cardboard sleeve itself, Third Man didn’t skip any corners on this one. [Could just be our sad, collector selves, but nothing gives us a chub like a cardboard sleeve. Well, almost nothing…] Anyway, as is the usual with these things, Third Man’s gonna be recording the show for a live LP, and as an added bonus, Jack’s taking the girls into his magic shack to record two new ones for a blue series 7-inch. Is it just us, or has Third Man been doing everything right lately?

YOU'RE BREAKING MY HEART

If you checked out this week’s RUNDOWN, you mighta seen that there ain’t SHIT happening tonight [No offense if you’ve got a show going on] But we just remembered that a movie we’ve been looking forward to for a bit is finally gonna be at The Belcourt. Who Is Harry Nilsson [And Why Is Everybody Talkin’ About Him]? is a new doc movie featuring a ton of celebs just gabbing about Harry Nilsson. What an appropriate title, too. Seriously feels like everywhere we look we are reading something about Harry Nilsson or hearing him on some playlist or something [same goes for Betty White — what’s up with that?] Anyways, there are two showing tonight: first at 8PM and the second later tonight at 10:30PM. Make it out to atleast one of them, because they’re the only showings going on. And now, we leave you with one of our favorite semi-forgotten Nilsson tracks and the trailer for the movie…

We know the last week or so have been a little slower than usual around these parts, but we’re gonna try and fix that this week. No tricks — just treats. Maybe we’ll even put on our Fall colors for you…. If you’re lucky. Anyways, lots of good shows going down this week. Philly’s finest, Kurt Vile, is gonna be in town over the weekend and that just makes our Autumnal dreams come true. Oh and a sick house show we putting together for ya. Oh and maybe we’ll announce another show later this week that’ll make you go, “Seriously? Fuck yeah.”

TOLD YA SO

And just like that! See!! Read the bottom of the Spits post we just made. Ha! Scion/VICE announced earlier today the Strange Boys/Natural Child show happening at the Knitting Factory on October 28th. So stoked. Natural Child and Strange Boys just wrapped up a nice little 10-day tour together and it looks like that band-friendship is turning into a total love-dovey get-it-on-ship. We’ll be up there [probably bouncing around all night between this show and the JEFF show at MHOW] Anyways, we highly suggest every Nashvillian high tail it up to Brooklyn at the end of the month and show those losers how to party. As is the norm with these things — you can expect a split 7″ to follow the show at some point. We’ll keep you posted on everything as it comes — FUCK YEAH — IT’S NATURAL

THURSDAY OCTOBER 28
:: The Strange Boys

@ Knitting Factory [Brooklyn, NY]
$FREE – 18+ – 10PM

You can RSVP for the FREE show here.

THE HOUSE THAT SCION BUILT

Photo by Bekah Cope

We’ll go ahead and admit it: we don’t mind all this Scion biz. Some people blow their horns and claim “sell-out” — but all it really boils down to is that we’ve got like 5 pairs of socks we got for free, split 7″s from some sick bands, and they put together fun free shows. It’s not like you gotta buy the car or anything. And now they’re giving us a free new EP from The Spits. Haunted Fang Castle [pictured below] is some different ground for The Spits. Like, forilly weird. We’re figuring Scion just dropped the big bucks and the bad boys just shelled out a couple Halloween-y weirdo jams. Take the money and run. Anyways, click the picture below to download the new EP for free. There’s a downloadable booklet that goes along with it [and apparently there are 10″ records available — be on the lookout]

If you’ve been keeping up — there oughtta be a Hunx/Kid Congo split 7″ on the way and a J-Boys/Nobunz split on the way. Oh and Natural Child has a one-off listed in New York with Strange Boys later this month —- just sayin’.

ONCE IN ALIVE TIME

Wait… when was the last week that PUJOL wasn’t putting something out? Or maybe here’s a better question — when is the next week that PUJOL won’t be putting something out? We don’t have the answers. Fresh after putting out a new cassette [Sextape, available at Grimey’s] a Live EP and a Third Man 7″ [here] the bad boys are about to release another new single on you. This new single means an extra lot to us — we made Alive At the Same Time available for download a long time ago and now we’re finally getting to see it get the vinyl treatment it deserves. Jonas and the duders over at Turbo Time are who you can send your thank you letters to [that’s where we’ll be sending ours] The single [which you can buy for the first time tonight at Douglas Corner Cafe] comes on clear vinyl with the UK-stylee punchout. There’s also an alternate cover available for download here [talk about options. These babies always got you covered]

The cover on the left is the one that you’ll find on most of the singles. The cover on the right is the downloadable one [Personally, we’re feeling that one way more] Head on over to the show tonight or to the Turbo Time site and snag a copy now.
