TWO WORDS: FUCKIN RIPPER. That’s the best way to describe Milk Music’s new LP Cruise Your Illusion that came out last month via Fat Possum. Mixing the best elements of the Wipers, Husker Du, and maybe even a little Neil Young, Milk Music have really set the bar with this one with Nick Coxen’s shredding ability on full display throughout the entire recording. In an age when endless punk albums from many different subgenres are readily available for anyone who’s got a mind to track them down, it’s a pretty amazing feat to come up with something as original as “Cruise Your Illusion” while still staying in the parameters of what made this type of music relevant in the first place. Consider this a recommendation. Oh Yeah, Milk Music and Destruction Unit are playing the Stone Fox on June 2nd. You should probably go. Stream a track from “Cruise Your Illusion” below.

We read the blogs, we check the boards, we keep out ears close to the ground, but still we somehow miss out on big news from time to time. Case-in-point: a track from the new Oblivians record was released a month ago! Did you know that shit? We did not know that shit. The track, “I’ll Be Gone,” is the first single off their new record, Desperation. It definitely sounds like a post-Reigning Sound Greg Cartwright song, but it’s still cool to hear how that sorta thing comes out when put through the Oblivians filter. Pre-order for Desperation went up a couple days ago, so head over to In the Red if you want the limited color vinyl. With him not tour as much and seemingly putting his focus on Fuzz, we were beginning to wonder if we would get a solo offering from Ty Segall before the end of the year. We didn’t have to wonder for too long as the Golden State Warrior announced plans for his next LP yesterday. Sleeper [due out Aug. 20 on Drag City] will be the first proper Ty record since last year’s Twins, and even the thirty second teaser video has it showing serious promise. Check it below and get ready.

CRAZY SPIRIT

After releasing one of the best records of 2012 (looking at you Hank Wood & the Hammerheads), we haven’t heard to much out of the Toxic State Records camp lately. That doesn’t mean they haven’t been doing anything. It just means we’re a bunch of jabronies and are in need getting the low-down from our main man DD666. Looks like the just put on a pretty sick festival, and now there’s a compilation LP to boot. Ground Zero, released on Toxic State to coincide with the festival, is pretty slab that gives you a tastes of all the currently NY punk scene has to offer including tracks from Crazy Spirit, Dawn of Humans, and the aforementioned Hammerheads. Our favorite bogus bros have been hitting the road hard lately: tours, Coachella, and opening for the Flaming Lips. Baby boys are moving on up, and a couple days ago, we were treated with the first new material from JEFF since the release of Hypnotic Nights last summer. The track, “Melting Place,” is included in the free Garage Swim sampler released this week. It’s a return to their more stoner-y, hard rock side. We’re talking Rafiki’s Vision-era JEFF here. JEFF the brotherhood – Melting Place

We’ve been repping Mikal Cronin’s magic for several years now. It seems like only yesterday that Moonhearts were playing at Glenn Danzig’s House. From his time with them to his collaborative efforts with Ty Segall to his solo debut two years ago on Trouble In Mind, we have always been clear on exactly how we feel about the Cron-bone. In a time where “garage rock” is a term and genre abused by lazy journalists and musicians alike, Mikal has never been afraid to rise above the trends. Truly smart songwriting and a blind dedication to pop music has shaped him into one of the more relevant artists in American rock and roll. Today marks the release of his second solo full-length, MCII, and it doesn’t disappoint one bit. On the contrary, it gives you everything you could want from a Mikal Cronin record while also giving you more. More sweet melodies, more orchestration, more crooners, more dancers. We don’t want to get too excited, but this might be the one that takes him to the next level. Pick it up here, and see him at the Stone Fox on June 24.

As we’ve mentioned a time or two, we were graced with a rare performance by LA-based bedroom guru Muzz last week. The show was a rocker. One of those real “scared the floor might cave in/fuck it, it’s a party” type deals. Fox Fun killed it, showing off some of the material that’ll be on the LP they’re working on. Gnarwhal reminded us of why we love house shows in the first place. Muzz, as promised, was really something special. Harmonized guitar, falsetto vocals…what more could you ask for? The show was recorded live to tape, so we’ll see what comes of that. Luckily for us, the queen Julia Bee and the young Amelia Anderson were also there to catch the party on film. Make the jump below to see exactly what went down.
