FACTOIDS ON FACTUMS

FACTUMS

We can never decide whether we think it’s “whatever” when bands do the whole “We’re not going to show our faces because the music is mysterious and we are equally as mysterious and blah blah blah” thing or if we think it’s just really kind of lame. After rereading that last sentence, I can kind of tell that we think it’s pretty lame. But that doesn’t change the fact that Factums are making some pretty great tunes right now. They put out quite a few releases over the last few years with labels like Sacred Bones and Siltbreeze [If that doesn’t have you sold right there, you need to do some serious mirror-to-self time, bebe] The band is really everything you’re looking for if you’re looking for gloomy – post-Kraut synths – punk tinges, knowhatimean?? Check out some tunes below.

PRIME REAL ESTATE IN THE NASHY AREA

So remember a while ago when we were talking about our Jersyian buddies, Real Estate, and how we were trying to talk them into coming back to town? Well, they are! Mark your calendars, babies, because you don’t want to make any other plans for March 22. They’re bringing their Brooklyn friends Woods with them [Woods have put out releases on Captured Tracks and Woodsist and are very primetime themselves] This show comes almost exactly a year after Real Estate’s last Nashy show [a post-SXSW show at the Gingerbread House with The Beets, EMP, and Denney & The Jets first show…. you missed that one, didn’t you?] This one will also be a post-SXSW show, a nice recovery show for all the mayhem that’s sure to happen in Austin this year. See you at the show!

DON'T FORGET ABOUT TONIGHT!

YEESH

We’re pretty sure this is how things are going to look tonight at The School Jerks // Natural Child // Cannomen // Crumbs show. Seriously though, there’s been a little bit of a drought recently in regards to really great touring acts coming to town [Come on, it’s been like a week and a half or something] So we highly suggest going out tonight and getting your fix over at the Glenn Danzig House.

FICTION TIME

Winter: cold cold cold cold cold [Well, here in Nashy it’s more: cold – wierd really nice day – snowy – cold – cold] Either way, it’s cold most the time. Which means lots of indoor activities. Like reading!! If you’re looking for some interesting stories to check out this month, check out the current issue of VICE. Our buddy Siram [of Liquor Store, LiveFastDie, every band you love] read us a little story the other day and we figured we’d share it with you. Siram and the boys will be here in mid-January at the Danzig boys’ House. He has the biggest mouth in rock and roll. Literally. Not in that he talks lots of smack, but his mouth is gigantic. So go grab a blanket and curl up by a fire [not too close!] and let Siram serenade you with a sweet supple story. Yeah!

Sarim reading out loud… awesome.

LISTMAS

Today, the second day of Listmas, features a list from our Floridian kemo sabes Magic & The Johnsons. We’ve talked about the boys before, but let’s get to know them a little more. They are two boys: Sam and Tim. They started out as a band in the earrrrly parts of January this year, and grew and grew and then played the Orange You Glad Fest and then started playing shows on the reg at Lou’s with lots of our other favorite Florida bands [Ozzy & the Bobos, Hot Hands, blah blah blah] Then they got to be pretty familiar with the Florida’s Dying guys and ended up playing shows with bands like Box Elders. That’s a pretty nice evolution they’ve got going on there, don’t you think? Yeah, we think so too. Anyways, they’re in the middle of a brief hiatus because Tim’s in the Air Force. Anyways, let’s get listing….

Top Ten Places to Shotgun a Beer

MAGIC & THE JOHNSONS

10. Behind a hotel on your way to see the Goddamn Doo Wop Band-the security guard has to be a little G and hollas “Take it to the head!”

9. At a connivence store while stocking the cooler on a graveyard shift. Try and remember to pick up the empties.

8. During the aftermath of a presidential assassination. Toss up between JFK and Michael Jackson.

7. While pogoing at a Davilla 666 show.

6. Prior to starting a 5k for a charity event sponsored by the Air Force. Cup your hands Chandler!

5. Before and after having a menage-a-trois with a mother of two and the Joker.

4. Minutes before trying to lift an SG from a Gibson Boutique. Try not to get booked but talk as much shit as possible after getting caught.

3. Immediately after the first time you go soft in girls/boys mouth. May need to do 2. 8. or all 12.

2. Anywhere. Anytime. Duh

1. At a FD shotgun heard round the world party. Fuuck yeah!

“Gonna call your friends. Gonna grab some cans. Gonna grab some pens. Gonna stick it in. Let the fun begin. It’s a shotgun party heard around the world. Glug glug glug” – Coconut Coolouts

Thanks Sam & Tim, you guys are real babes.

GOOD TIMES ON THE REG

Body Switchers

Guess who’s got a new cassette up their sleeve? Phew, OK, good, you can read! Natural Child’s been absolutely killing it lately, and they’re not gonna slow it down for nobody. They put out their debut 7″ [Infinity Cat] around 3 months ago and are going to keep things moving right along with the release of a new cassette called Body Switchers. It’s kind of difficult to explain the concept behind Body Switchers, it’s not exactly the “Freaky Friday” kind of body switching that you might be thinking of. It’s more of a Stevie Nicks thing. Right? Whatevers. The tape is going to feature lots of new jams that are going to get your gonads for sure. If you want a taste, head over to Glenn Danzig’s tomorrow night to watch the boys. Apparently, they’ll be playing lots of material from the new tape. As far as release dates go, you can probably expect this one in the early parts of next year.

GETTING GIFTY

Awwwww

It is primetime to do some holiday shopping at two of your favorite local businesses: Grimey’s and Local Honey. Grimey’s is celebrating the season as they always do, except it’s a little special-er than usual this year becuase it’s their 10 year anniversary! It’s going down this Saturday [Dec. 19] and it’s gonna make our wallets much lighter. Here’s the scoop: Lylas, Melissa Mathis, Nahy Ukulele Orchestra feat. Tom Littlefield and Jen Gunderman play Charlie Brown Christmas, human snowglobe, bigtime discounts, goodies, and maybeeeee the last time for you to get riled up by Naughty Santa [we’ll miss him making fun of us for buying Kraftwerk records] If that doesn’t spike your eggnog, they will probably have some spiked eggnog. All day Saturday, be there, we will.

Picture 1

As for Local Honey, our fave-babe Shea Steele informed us that she’s got some fucking nuts-o deals going on this Friday [Dec. 18th] to celebrate the season. Listen to this: 30% off EVERYTHING! INCLUDING GIFT CARDS!! That’s free money people [‘Cause you know you’re gonna spend it there anyways. Don’t pretend for one single second like you’re not gonna by that Crack Mountain sweater or a White Rabbit skirt] She’ll have champagne [Shea, girl, you are always puttin’ on our ritz] and some choice tunes to party to. This one’s happnin from 5-9PM only, so get in there and get the goods.

LISTMAS

HA! We totalllly faked you guys out! We said don’t expect any lists, but check it ^^ it’s time for 12 DAYS OF LISTMAS! We’re bored of most blogs doing their lame year-end lists where they talk about how Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear and Radiohead and some guy who plays a gameboy are the best things that have ever happened to music, so we figured we would get 12 of our friends [some Nashvillian, some not] to make lists of their own [some short, some long] about whatever they want. We’ll post a new list everyday until Christmas. Get stoked! This first list comes from Metro Councilman Ronnie Steine. Check it….. Ronnie’s got some pretty impeccable taste.

MY LIST OF THE BEST ALBUMS OF 2009

Councilman Ronnie Steine

In no particular order:

Monsters of Folk – Monsters of Folk

This “super group” of folk-rockers has provided a melding of talents that may have produced the year’s best effort.

Mayer Hawthorne – A Strange Arrangement

A debut album that channels the Motown and 60s/70s music of my youth.

Dawes – North Hills

Another debut album. Described as “new school country folk,” Dawes is also a throwback to another time.

Black Eyed Peas – The E.N.D.

This album is pure fluff and pure fun. The Peas provide silly lyrics and rhythms that you can’t get out of your mind. And then there’s Fergie!

Eric Clapton/Steve Winwood – Live From Madison Square Garden

These two old guys can still really play and their music is timeless.

Phoenix – Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix

The French rockers have created one of the year’s most unique albums.

Bruce Springsteen – Working on the Dream

The Boss simply does it as no one else can. This album is a terrific combination of his rich lyrics with the wonder of the E Street Band’s magic.

U2 – No Line on the Horizon

The 11th studio album from U2 reasserts their place as one of the great bands of all time.

Rosanne Cash – The List

Johnny’s daughter sings some of her dad’s list of most important country songs. The song choices are as interesting as her solo and duet renditions.

Pink – Funhouse

Pink is my guilty pleasure. This album is her break-up music and not as fun as usual, but nevertheless is full of personality.

Norah Jones— The Fall

Norah reinvents herself with a guitar and produces her liveliest album to date.

On the real though, this is the only “Best Records of 2009” list you guys will probably get from us. You already know what our favorite was.
