I LIKE DOG FOOD

You know, we just watched that Heart – Barracuda video and it reminded us that we haven’t said anything about our buddies down in Atlanta, The Barreracudas. So now, here we are, talking about our buddies down in Atlanta, The Barreracudas. First off, we’d just like to ask: what are they putting in the water in Atlanta? Seriously, could this city provide any more awesome bands right now? The babes rock and roll, but the more we think about it, the more we realize that words won’t do this band justice. Because, I mean, it’s hard to talk about a band that sings songs about eating dog food and not make them sound like dummies. They put out a 7″ on Douchemaster this past spring and have since developed a deservedly strong fanbase in the area. Not only that, but they’ve been playing with some of our other fave babes lately [Nerve City, Trashcans, Coconut Coolouts, Personal & the Pizzas, etc.]

Barreracudas- NY Honeys (4.02.09) from rob downs on Vimeo.

There’s a little video for you of them playing “NY Honeys” from their first show ever. That was a Bobby Ubangi Benefit show with Deerhunter and Black Lips. Not a bad bill for you first show as a band, right?

Pick up their 7″ here!

EY BAY-BAY

Around 7:30 tomorrow night at the Ryman you can see some girl we went to synagogue with.

Total babe, right? So far her biggest claim to fame is a song about roses from the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movie. If we were her we’d call it quits right there, but she just won’t go away. Well anyways, she’s been on the Warped Tour for the past couple a months, and now she’s playing the Ryman, which we guess is a pretty big honor.

As for Heart…

Nuff’ said.

THREE DAY WEEKEND

Loverboy embodies one of the great archetypes of American rock music. They’re one of those groups you say is your “favorite band” when you’re tipsy with some friends listening to 105.9 The Rock at 4pm on a tuesday. But really, all you’ve ever heard was thirty seconds from “Workin’ for the Weekend,” or whatever the fuck it’s called. We were gonna make some witty comment about how it’s labor day weekend and Loverboy has that song, but whatever.

@ Wildhorse Saloon

TEA & ORANGES … HOLDING MY BREATH

We recently signed up over here to see if we could get clones of ourselves because, well you know, who wouldn’t want to be in two places at once? Especially on November 5th this year. We got word from our Canadian Mata-friends, Fucked Up, that they’re going to be performing their album The Chemistry of Common Life in it’s entirety this November 5th at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple. They also said there will be some “COOL SPECIAL GUESTS”. Sometimes that means they’ll do old Black Flag songs with Keith Morris, and sometimes that means they’ll do things with that guy from Vampire Weekend [sorry if you’re into that, it’s just not our bag]. Either way, guaranteed to be interesting.

The other place we need to be is at TPAC for Grandpa Cohen’s show. We’ve caught Fucked Up a couple times and had some pizza-pool-parties with them, but we’ve never managed to catch Leonard Cohen [Although we did press our little ears against the doors of the Beacon Theater a few months ago in New York. That kind of counts, right?] Whatever, we’ll be at Leonard Cohen and if he plays “The Butcher” we’ll cry and cry all night. Don’t believe us? Just listen to it and see if you can keep from gushing.

So, hopefully we’ll hear back from our clone-buddies soon and get the ball rolling. Tickets for the Leonard Cohen show are hard to come by, so good luck. Watch the Matablog for information on how to obtain Fucked Up tickets.

"IF THERE WAS A SCENE, I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT IT"

Since there isn’t too much going on tomorrow night [unless you’re a Toadies fan] we highly suggest heading over to The Belcourt to see Eileen Yaghoobian’s Died Young Stayed Pretty. The documentary highlights the creativity-juices seeping from today’s top poster designers. And it really shines light on a scene that most are hardly aware of. We’ve always been poster enthusiasts [Flatstock is always one of our favorite things at SXSW] and last Hannukah mom and dad got us a copy of this book. So it’s pretty understandable that we’d be stoked to catch this film. The poster above was done by Ron Liberti [what a babe] who’s work is featured in the film as well as the works of artists like Keith Herzik, Nashville’s Bryce McCloud, and Darren Pasemko. Not only that but Eileen will be in attendance herself! Check here for a more in-depth analysis of the flick and below for the trailer.

SAVE ME

Speaking of Jay Reatard, he and the crew just busted out a new video a while ago for “It Ain’t Gonna Save Me”. It’s filled with little kids and wet shirts and grown men, among other things. And, it’s another Reatard video where Jay gets wheeled around in a wheel barrow. We’ve been on video shoots before and know they can be kind of tiring, but come on Jay, you’re the star! The video’s also for the radio version of the song [notice the censorings and they drop the keyboards around the 2:40 mark]. Check it out…

Jay and the boys have a bunch of dates coming up, check it out here. They’ve also got a little Shattered Records tour lined up soon with Useless Eaters, Nobunny, Box Elders, and Hunx and His Punx. More on that later though.

GARAGE PARTY!

So earlier this year VICE and SCION teamed up to bring us that huge metal-fest in Atlanta, which ruled. But now, they’re really baiting us. They just officially announced their Garage Fest taking place in Portland on October 17th. Look at that lineup. Seriously. It’s like we don’t even need porn anymore. The shows happen all day and are spread out over four different venues, which makes us kind of glad that we aren’t going to be there. There’s no possible way to see all the bands we’d want to see. But whatever. It’s nice to see some Tennessee representatives out there [Jay Reatard, Cheap Time, Those Darlins]. We caught the majority of these bands at this last year’s SXSW, and you can catch some of them in this city soon [King Khan BBQ, Black Lips, The Beets, Yussuf Jerusalem]! If you’re going to be in the Portland area on October 17th, you’d be nuts to miss this.

If you’re too lazy to go the site, here’s the lineup and check the comments for set-times:
