SEBASTIAN SPEAKS STRIKES SPARES SSSSSS

A few months before we turned 5 years old, we begged and begged mama and papa to let us have a bowling party for our birthday. Didn’t work out. We did, however, get some pretty fucking spectacular coloring books. Sebastian Speaks‘ mama and papa [together as one — William Tyler] is having a bowling party this Saturday night for it’s 5th birthday and it’s gonna be sick! On the real, when was the last time you got to go down to Strike & Spare and catch top-notch bands? Never. That sounds about right.

Willy put out the first Sebastian Speaks record a whopping 5 years ago [Hilarity and Despair, a record of found answering machine tapes, is still one of our favorite records to show off] They’re also responsible for putting out the Deluxin’ Black / White LP, which is definitely worth snagging if you haven’t already. Nathan told us he wrote “We Are the Men” when he was 12 [Amazing] Since then they’ve put out releases from The Paper Hats, Forrest Bride, Hands Off Cuba, and a lot more. In all seriousness and earnestness, William and Sebastian Speaks are a couple of the best things in this city and if anyone deserves to see or feel your appreciation — it’s them. So on Saturday after all the Record Store Bidness, roll down to Strike & Spare and hang with the bad boys.

NEVER GONNA GROW UP

CRUSADERS OF LOVE

Wait, what? France? Seriously? These guys are from France? I mean, it’s not that unbelievable, there are lots of good things in France. It’s just that… I don’t know. There’s usually not things this good from France. Crusaders of Love are a four-piece band that pump out the jams in a way similar to how a lovechild between The Exploding Hearts and Black Lips might. Sounds good, right? Right. They’re debut LP, Never Grow Up, just came out a couple weeks ago on Douchemaster Records and it’s sick. Perfect summer jams.

Crusaders of Love – Good Time All The Time [mp3]

They’re coming to Nashville late next month [May 25th] and playing Glenn Danzig’s House with PUJOL, Denney & The Jets, and Ben Steine’s Money. Hit it! Crusaders of Love have lots of tour dates up here, and have a 7″ on Die Slaughterhaus that you can scoop here. Oh and a 7″ on Danger Records.

YOUR RECORD STORE DAY OPTIONS

We love records. We love record stores. We love old smelly vinyl sleeves. We love Nashville. So, duh, we love being here for Record Store Day. There’s a whole boatload of free shows and parties and stuff going on this Saturday [April 17th] So here’s a quick rundown of what’s going on where, who’s playing when, where you can pick up specific releases, and who’s gonna have some Jimmy Carl’s.

GRIMEY’S NEW & PRE-LOVED RECORDS
1604 8TH AVE SOUTH | OPEN AT 10AM

If you were here last year, you know that Grimey’s has kind of set the bar for record stores on RSD. This year features a ton of great stuff, including special RSD releases from Fucked Up, Dum Dum Girls, Happy Birthday, Magnetic Fields, Pavement, blah blah blah. They’ll also have new releases from your favorite local acts PUJOL, Bows & Arrows, Coolin’ System, and American Bang. We should mention that all those locals are also playing sets during the day. Along with lots of DJs —- like US! What else? Killer barbecue from Jimmy Carl’s Lunch Box, Grand Palace will screenprint tote bags for you, Yazoo will get you sloppy, The Basement will be screening the new Mountain Goats movie, oh and bins among bins of $1 LPs and $2 CDs and sale prices on stuff inside the store. Seriously, this is not to be missed. Check the Grimey’s site for all the full information.

THE GROOVE NEW & USED VINYL & CDS
103 SOUTH 11TH STREET

The Groove is really blowing us away with their lineup for this year’s RSD. We haven’t gotten firm details on set times and all that, but we’ll keep you posted and we can go ahead and tell you that these people are playing: Emmylou Harris, Tristen, Hans Condor, Daniel Pujol, The Tallest Trees, Outlaw Lovers, Distribution, The Grayces, Danger & The Steel Cut Oats, Illnana, and Chris Crofton: The Alcoholic Stuntman. Yes, Daniel Pujol will be playing at the Groove and at Grimey’s on RSD. What a dude. Anyways, The Groove will be offering sale prices in the store [15% off new, 25% off used] as well as $1 LPs outside. They’re also gonna be giving away a bunch of shwag [like an autographed Emmylou guitar, Bongo Java treats, goodies in general] Mas Tacos will be there slinging out tacos. Get on it!

||| THIRD MAN RECORDS |||
623 7TH AVE SOUTH

Oh, Third Man, you always know how to take a day and turn it into some crazy weird experience that elicits mass “wtf”s from people all over the world. This year they’re jumping in on the festivities by re-releasing the first Racontuers LP on copper vinyl [out 0f 300] Plus Brendan Benson and Patrick Keeler will be there “with friends” to perform some Raconteurs songs. Since it’s just the two of them – they’re going by The Racontwoers. Real clever babes. They’re also going to be raffling off two of the three go-karts from the “Steady As She Goes” music video [Brendan’s and Baby Jack’s] The third go-kart [Mr. Jack White’s] will be auctioned off with all the money going towards the Nashville Homeless Mission. Go by and get crazy and spend lots of money on special exclusive records and buy some Paletas and BBQ!

WHY ISN'T OUR PUBLIC ACCESS THIS GOOD?

We Have Signal: Jeff the Brotherhood from We Have Signal on Vimeo.

So there’s this badass Alabama venue called the Bottle Tree Cafe. It is every band’s dream venue. Seriously, ask anyone that’s played there. But there’s also this public access cable show in Alabama called We Have Signal, and they film shows and do interviews with sick bands and it makes us really jealous. Not saying we don’t love all the great stuff on Nashville’s public access. Kind of saying that. Anyways, they did a whole show for JEFF the Brotherhood back when they were on tour with Screaming Females and it’s great. Seems like Jake was a little under the weather, but JEFF playing under the weather is like seeing any other band at their prime. Suck it!

Let’s wrap up a little more JEFF-talk real quick though [Maybe we should start a new section here called JEFF-TALK? What do you think?] We got word that not only has their UK 7″ sold out, but they’re about to go to pressing for their JEFF/Ty Segall split and Suicide Squeeze is about to press them a new 7″. That’s like 21″ if you put all those together. Pretty impressive. They’re also slated for a pretty huge summertime tour with baby-babes Quintron & Miss Pussycat. Check here for dates. As far as Nashville shows go, you can catch them next Friday at Mercy Lounge or next Thursday in Murfreesboro. Then they’re heading out with the dream creamers to Chaos in Tejas. PS we heard the new Heavy Cream album and saw the cover and oh man you turkeys are NOT even ready

BETTER THAN PROM

We meant to make a post about this yesterday but we’ve never taken any time-management classes and so we didn’t really plan things out right and ended up going to Memphis with those Natty boys to see Box Elders and Black Lips. Needless to say, it was a party. And we might have a couple things cooking up for Nashy now —- look out for special guests or secret shows at Danzig’s this summer. Anyways, tonight brings the annual Zeitgeist festival over at USN. Every year this things gets better and better. It’s cheap, starts early ends early, and displays some of the best young local acts in Nashville. And you know, we love the kids. We luh da keedz. Trick luh da keedz.

Things are kicking off pretty soon and will be going until 11 tonight. Get out there and do it. All the information is on the flyer above. Trick luh da keeeedz

IT'S ALWAYS FRIDAY NIGHT

If you’re in Nashville tonight there’s really no excuse to not be at Little Hamilton. Especially because Australia’s Useless Children just got added to tonight’s already stacked bill [feat. White Mice, MLU, Suffering Bastard, Dawn, No Compassion, and Lazer Slut] I guess the only acceptable excuse for not coming is if you’re quite literally near the brink of losing your hearing [because this show would absolutely push you over the edge] Even still, your a wuss if you don’t at least try. Anyways, here’s the rest of the bill – with set times. And MLU’s gonna have their S/T LP there so pick up a copy!

:: Dawn [8:30]
:::: No Compassion [8:55]
:::::: Lazer Slut [9:10]
:::::::: Suffering Bastard [9:30]
:::::::::: White Mice [10:00]
:::::::::::: MLU [10:35]
:::::::::::::: Useless Children [11:00]

BAMBI IS DEAD

Malcolm Mclaren was a terrible person. He was manipulative, condescending, narcissistic, selfish, and an all-round dick; but he had a greater impact on music and popular culture than any of us ever will. We might hate Malcolm because Johnny Rotten told us to, but this guy did so many [better] things than just managing the Sex Pistols. He practically invented English punk, discovered Boy George, and made the first Top Ten single ever to feature scratching. He also took some nude pictures of underage girls [paid for by the BBC], and forced members of Bow Wow Wow to prositute themselves for “team building,” but hey, who hasn’t? You did some pretty cool things Malcom, but you could be a real prick sometimes.
