IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME COMING

It’s finally here. It’s been nearly 6 months since Cy Barkley’s first show back in October at the Infinity Cat Showcase and we’ve finally got something for your little ears to listen to. Since, as of right now, Cy doesn’t have a myspace or any way to hear his music online — this will be your first chance to hear some real Barkley materials on the webs. And it rules. Think if maybe Jay Reatard had been from Atlanta instead of Memphis and was buddies with all the Carbonas dudes and they always hung out and listened to The Replacements — that’s the kind of vibe we get from Cy’s tunes. According to Cy, this song’s going to be on his upcoming 7″ from Baby Don’t Records. We’ll be stoked to finally have this bad boy on vinyl. If you haven’t gotten a chance to catch Cy in the flesh and blood, he’s playing a show tonight at FooBar with The Outlaw Lovers and Those Damn Torpedoes. He’s got a bunch more shows coming up too, like that Harlem show [May 13] and The Spits show [May 21] GET ON IT

HIGH SCHOOL ROACHES

If you’ve been cruising the internets today, you’ve probably seen a lot of talk about Mr. Oxford Mississippi – John Barrett. His latest 7″ single High School Roaches just came out on Baby Don’t Records [In case you’re unaware, that’s the same label that put out the Kintaro 7″ and is run by Cy Barkley of Cy Barkley and The Cyborgs — not their real band name] The single totally kills. It’s like a dreamboat mixture of punk-garage-southern tinged- rock rolling- john barretty- you know. John Barrett isn’t slated to come to Nashville anytime right now, but we’re working on getting him and crew to come up for a show. After seeing them at SXSW for the 5th time, we can absolutely vouch that this single is worth snagging, so pick it up! Plus he’s just the nicest dude.

KING KHAN & THE SHRINES & THE FRESH & THE ONLYS [IN PICS]

Last Thursday brought King Khan and his Shrines to Exit/In [along with The Fresh & Onlys] and if you were there then you know how much of a party it was. I’m gonna go ahead and go on record here as saying that the keyboard player in The Shrines makes that band. We tried to watch King Khan and his go-go girl, but our eyes would immediately find their ways back over to him. D. Watusi even snagged a key. Annnnnyways, Bekah was there snapping photos as always and here they are. If you missed out on this one, don’t be too bummed — Fresh & Onlys are going to be doing another tour in the next 6 months and we’ve heard word that they’ll be hitting Nashville again.

TYME TO GET MELTED

Sometimes I just sit and wonder how Ty Segall is so awesome at everything. Seriously, his old band rules, his videos rule, his covers rule, his album art rules but most of all, his songs are some of the best coming out right now. If he doesn’t make a million dollars soon, there is no justice in the world.

With that said, I am so stoked for this new record. Melted, out on Goner [May 25] was recorded in late 2009/early 2010 with Sic Alps babe Mike Donovan. “Caesar,” the first single off of Melted was released a few weeks ago. I know a lot of bands get Stones comparisons on here, but f’real…”Caesar” totally sounds like a Beggar’s Banquet jam to me. I remember Ty saying in a recent interview that the new record was going to be cleaner, and it definitely comes through here. If you don’t already have the 45, you need to do something about that before anyone finds out, and keep an eye out for Melted in your local record store next month. Summer jam 2010. I’m calling it right now.

Check out a couple videos Goner posted on their blog of Ty killing it at SXSW, the first of which is a live version of the new single with some dank audio.

And here Ty tells us his 5 favorite things. I totally love four out of five. I’m sure I would love surfing too, but y’know…Tennessee…

HITTIN' THE VIRAL WAVES

Well look who’s got their own fancy primetime music video on the interwebs! Our buddy Cj Giordano put together this video for Daniel Pujol’s “Deathmask” and it’s awesome. It’s got everything you’d ever want in a music video: dudes duding around on battle cruisers, explosions, suns, old people, more suns. You might now some of Cj’s other work if you’ve seen any of the Hootenanny movies [if you haven’t seen them, do your best to because they’re awesome] You can catch Daniel tonight at The End around 11:30 for free. Do it do it. His 7″ also just became available for pre-order on the Infinity Cat site.

LISTENING WON'T MAKE YOU CLEANER

BATHS

Look at these babes. When did rock and roll get so cute and stuff? What’s that Silver Jews song where Dave Berman talks about how there’s no more ugly rockers? Whatever. Normally, we’re skeptical of good looking bands that aren’t from Nashville and make jangly-garage-semi psych-fuzzy art jams, but the more you look into Baths the more you can tell that they’re pretty for real. They’re from San Francisco and just put out a new cassette on one of our favorite labels, Wizard Mountain. Suffice to say, it’s pretty killer. Really really though, who can scoff at a band that does a Gories cover and puts a Mark E Smith line on their myspace? You? Ok, fine.

Baths aren’t scheduled to come anywhere near the Nashy area for a while, but they are slated to release a new 7″ with HoZac soon as well as their debut full length on Woodsist. That was quick. They’ve also already got one 7″ out there on Rad Key Records. Get ’em!

TAKE ME TO THE RIPPER

The buddys over at OCMD just made a post about a show on the West Side featuring Ty Segall, Baths, and JEFF. They also pointed us towards footage of the new JEFF hit “The River” Oops, apparently the new song is called “The Ripper” and the youtuber just got it wrong. They’ve played the tune a couple times here in Nashy and they’ll probably do it again when they get back later this month. They’ve got shows coming up at Mercy Lounge [Apr 23] for the Naked Without Us benefit and in Murfreesboro [Apr. 22] at YEAH! with Pujol. Get it got it good. In other news, we’re snaking this joke from OCMD because we think it’s really funny…

JEFF THE BROTHERHOOD – THE RIPPER

Wakka wakka wakka.
