NOT PRESCRIBED FOR INSOMNIACS

Next Sunday [Sept. 26] brings to town one of our heros: Mr. Ian Svenonius. He’s bringing along the rag-tag Chain & the Gang for a show at Little Hamilton that’s sure to be a rager. Really though. Check out that video down there from Rob Downs [We don’t know Rob, but he seems like a great Atlanta guy and we love his videos and his blog]. It’s such a treat to have Ian come to town and play somewhere like Little Hamilton. He hosts a super rad show on VBS called Soft Focus, and interviews the likes of Stephen Malkmus, Steve Albini, Ian MacKaye, Jello Biafra, etc. Oh, and he was in some other bands [The Make-Up, Weird War, Nation of Ulysses, David Candy] So yeah we are really psyched for him and his buddies to roll through.

BEN & CY FEST [The Road to GONER]

Shit guys. This is some serious business right here. We told you a little while ago that there was going to be a Woven Bones//Yussuf Jerusalem//Heavy Cream//Turbo Fruits show, but we thought we’d wait until a week before to let you know that Ty Segall and Mantles are playing too. And the fact that you’re getting this show for only $5!?!? That’s unheard of. We’ve talked about Woven Bones and Yussuf before, but here’s a little bit about the bands we’ve yet to highlight. And a few tracks for you to pocket at the end.

If you’ve had your eyes and ears sewn shut over the last year or so…. whatever, you’ve definitely heard of Ty. Evolving from bands like The Perverts and Traditional Fools, Ty brings something completely different to the plate than most of the garage-y bands around right now. And we love it. The herky-jerky, loud, catchy sounds they produce are a delight for our budding Nashvillian ears. Seriously though guys, I know we at the Deadquarters are stoked for lots of things, but Ty coming to town is something we’ve been waiting a long time for and we very strongly urge everyone come check it out. Ty recently wrapped up a tour with hometown sweety-pies JEFF the Brotherhood and has lots of great records you should pick up. WIZARD MOUNTAIN !

Who doesn’t love a Siltbreeze band?? The San Franciscans are gracing Glenn Danzig’s House on their way to Goner Fest ’09 this year and we are so stoked! They’re out with Ty Segall right now and actually a part of our DBA friends project “The Maze” and have played with some of our other favorite bands [Christmas Island, Splinters, etc.] With a release date of Sept. 22 on Siltbreeze, their LP will be literally hot off the presses when they play here on Wednesday. They’ve also put out release on Mt St Mtn and Dulc-i-tone [they put out that Thee Oh Sees // Intelligence split]. Getting lucky on Wednesday guys…. really.

FORTUNATE S.O.B.

John Fogerty graced the Mercy Lounge last night, we are super bummed we couldn’t be there. We got word about it earlier that day and spent the whole rest of our day trying to persuade mom and dad to let us stay out late on a school night, but they weren’t having it. Seriously though, mom & dad?? It’s CREEDENCE. We caught him at The Ryman a while back [Remember that? When he came up on that big thing that lifted up through the stage and they were selling John Fogerty plaid-button ups for 60 bones. Kind of weird.] Either way, you couldn’t have asked for a better way to kick-off the Americana Music Festival [which continues tonight through Sunday]

God damn. Fuck you mom & dad.

REID & WRITTEN

So, we’ve gotten word that tonight’s show at Little Hamilton will be the last Reid & Wright show….. ever? We know Reid’s been busy with his other projects, so it’s understandable to see this one come to an end. Even if we really don’t want it to. If you’ve got the chance and can stand the soggy weather, be sure to go out and catch this band one last time.

HEAVY PRAISE

We’re just under a month away from the release of JTB‘s Heavy Days, and after giving ourselves a good long time to soak in the album, we think we might be kind of ready to review it. The boys dropped us two copies before heading westward so we thought it only fitting to give two reviews: one from Forever Young and one from Deviants Die.

Deviants Die:

It’s poppy, it’s psychedelic, but most importantly, it’s heavy. There’s a reason that word appears so many times in the album, reminding everyone who’s stuck on the catchy melodies and flange-freakouts what this album is really about: rocking-the-fuck-out. It’s a bit of a departure from their last vinyl release, The Boys R Back In Town; you won’t find any thirteen-minute paeans to the act of ghost riding on this album; it’s too busy making you move to the distortion-drenched rhythms of singer Jake’s three-stringed guitar. Don’t get me wrong, there’s still enough studio trickery to make Michael Rother jealous, but it’s done to only flavor the album, not dominate it like their earlier releases.

Forever Young:

Insomnia is not a fun problem to have, but I have figured out ways of putting my sleeplessness to better use. Twice now I have found myself watching the sunrise in the mean streets of Nashville playing Heavy Days at the highest possible volume. The first of which being a much more moving experience. Scooped in a car around 4 AM on a Friday morning, a friend and I drove around the streets of Nashville for no real reason, just cruising. And, after a while, we started to talk about how weird Nashville is. How weird it is that we have a to-scale replica of The Parthenon. The conversation led us there, to those giant steps around 5:30 in the morning. We continued then to play JEFF’s Heavy Days in it’s entirety while dancing in/around The Parthenon, praising the Greek Gods and Goddesses while the morning staffers and the sun started to show up [absolutely true story.] The epitome of Nashville was reached that morning, and every morning should only dream to be so lucky. It should be mandated that Heavy Days be played at The Parthenon at sunrise every morning. In all seriousness though, Heavy Days is JEFF’s magnum opus [so far] and it’s the kind of record that I’ll have to buy 4 or 5 copies of because I’ll overplay them again and again. And over the next while, you’ll read reviews of the album where people will compare JEFF to bands like Wavves, and they’ll say things like “The Brotherhood is the bridge between stoner and pop.” And they’ll try to peg it as a Be Your Own Pet off-shoot. But JEFF is not Wavves. And “stoner” and “pop” are the bridges from JEFF to every other band. And I don’t think anyone could’ve shot from Be Your Own Pet and landed where they have. I’ve watched the Brotherhood grow for a long time, and I’m just now realizing that I’ve been lucky enough to witness some really heavy shit. Thanks guys. That, and I played the record for my mom, who’s response was, “This sounds like real rock and roll.” She knows her shit, too. Trust.

There you go! Doesn’t the JTB font on the album remind you a lot of the Nevermind font? Whatever. The album comes out on October 13 on Infinity Cat. We’ve heard talk of a release show at Glenn Danzig’s House, and the Grooms myspace says something about a show in Nashy with JEFF on the 13th…. we’ll be sure to keep you posted. Until then, you can catch them at Little Hamilton with Chain & The Gang on Sept. 26.

DRUNK CADETS

BACK!

Here is one music aficionado’s take on the whole thing:

pavement is the most boring bland dull uninspiring poster child for the worst part of the 90s wave of indie rock that almost drowned american music for ever….since yo la tengo.

music for old people

pretty much like everything from drag city.

We couldn’t be more stoked.
