THE-SHREDITORIAL

Time for another SHREDITORIAL!! This one is about high fructose corn syrup. We’re not totally convinced it’s all that bad for you. At least, we like to tell ourselves that because we are downing sodas on the reg.

Shreditorial #3

SHRED3

Dare Gawd,

You know what is totally awesome? High fructose corn syrup. Why is that awesome? Because you can make Family Value Fruit Snacks with it. You know, those gray+any fruit flavor color circles on wax paper that all the marginalized lower middle class kids had in elementary school. The coolest thing about high fructose corn syrup is that it is a sugar replacement that is actually an enzyme and no one really knows what it does to the human body, but Americans use it in everything! It could make us obese, or maybe do something really crazy that we find out about when we’re all 50 and weird Frankensteins. Who knows, the future is completely unregulated.

It’s probably metaphysically cheaper than sugar because we can make it in a lab without helping feed 20th century “communists”. If there is one thing Americans need more than high fructose corn syrup it is complete cognitive consistency, because history is biography and no one likes a flip-flopper or a “mind-changer.” America is the only country in the galaxy where we have overweight fat people and underweight rich people. It’s like when a fat king used to be sexy but the opposite. Even all the Caesars drank from a lead goblet, and now that we are all equal we should all be taking the same poisons, especially if the reflect your caste of consumption. So, now we have the freedom to construct unattainable image standards that are ruthlessly chased by the bourgeoisie that help pay to keep our society from eating itself alive. It’s like that snake that eats itself but it never has to die unless it is weak.

Sometimes I think that being healthy and green will be the next bougie fad. Eventually, that will permeate as a value to the dominant class and our understanding of ourselves will be reactive against or in agreement to the dominant moral hierarchy. Like contemporary liberals will actually become crazy conservatives in the future who hate fat people instead of gays. Like when young progressive Republicans thought they could stop at racism being bad and then save the leftovers to divide and conquer America. Like every time you make a solution it creates a problem when people take it too seriously. Really, no one knows what high fructose corn syrup does to the body. So maybe it is a business ethics thing: like, no one gets funded to do conclusive research on the effects of high fructose corn syrup because it probably does mess with the human body but it pays someone. I think tricking poor people to be fat is even laissez faire than calling the homeless and mentally ill lazy!

Also, I’m sure it acts as a sort of a deterrent for achievement or feeling good about yourself because maybe it changes the way your body processes sugar so you feel good for a while then you crash like drugs. I don’t know, but I love this crazy American emotional roller coaster called consumption. It is like an extension of democracy without all the reading or news. It is good to know that you can materially prove who you are via representing your lifestyle through your symbolically constructed association with images and goods. That is freedom: Freedom to construct any assemblage of sticky images out of a cultural $5 DVD bin at the Walmart of the world, and don’t forget about that popsicle in your pocket! Thanks for shredding your way into my disposable lifestyle Mrs. High Fructose Corn Syrup, you’re making me and Nathan do the icky shuffle.

What?,

Daniel Pujol

Tune in next week for more!

CHEAP TIME SUPERFAN!

Patton <3 Cheap Time

Well, well, welllllll…. looky there. Who’d ever thunk Patton Oswalt to be a Cheap Time fan?  It’s always nice to see someone who we think can be pretty funny crushing on some local flavor. Granted, Cheap Time’s S/T on In the Red did come out last year and not this year, but still, maybe he thinks it’s just that good. Good enough to be his number 3 “album of the year” a full year after it’s release. Maybe. This list came from the celebrity picks section over at the Gummy Awards; we didn’t find too much else worth talking about though. Don’t expect to find too many lists over in these parts………

PICK UP THE PHONE….

Well, tomorrow is officially the last time you will hear our sweet sweet voices broadcasting from 91.1 WRVU. After hearing about the community-cap, we figured we just wouldn’t reapply. So we didn’t, and tomorrow will be our last show. It’s gonna be a real show though, all killer no filler. We’ve got a few ideas stirring for future plans [podcasts? streaming playlists? jumping to the AM?] but for now we’re just aksing you guys to listen in from 4-5PM and call-in and tell us how much you love us and how “community” we are. We’re so community. We’ll probably even try and put some callers on the air. So call it in, ladies. 615/421/ROCK

We’ve talked about Air Waves a bit already here, but whatever we’re going to talk about them some more. Especially since our buddies over at Daytrotter posted up a recent session with the Brooklyn boppers that features three unreleased recordings. Count ’em! THREE! The songs just keep reminding us how great Nicole’s tunes are. Simple, sincere, so good. Air Waves rolled through town a while back for that house show at Willy T’s, and are planning to head out to Europe in the new year. We know they’ve been pow-wowing with the Captured Tracks fellas in regards to some new releases. We’ll keep you posted the mosted.

ONE YEAR?! ALREADY!??!

Halcyon Birthday

Whoa. Has Halcyon Bike Shop really been open for a year?? We were there the day they opened up hanging out with Clubber and Jammer and have been loyalists ever since. It’s crazy to look at the change this one shop has brought to Nashville in the last 12 months, and we couldn’t be happier for our buddies. We even contributed to The Rabbit’s last issue with an article about how much we appreciate Halcyon [There’s no byline for the article… we’re not sour about it or anything though…] To celebrate their birthday [which was technically Dec. 2] we went and hung out all day and got our bikes tuned up. But so everyone can celebrate it, they’re hosting a party Dec. 12th! It starts off with an Alley Cat race at Centennial Park at 2PM and finishes up with a party over at the shop. We’ve heard there we’ll be some tasty tacos nearby and that some of your favorite locals will be throwing down on the ones and twos.

Guest DJs
:: Willy T  <—- The Paper Hats, Silver Jews, Lambchop, Tim Chad & Sherry, everything you love
:::: Jamin Orrall  <—- One half of JEFF the Brotherhood, another half of The Crumbs
:::::: Whit Smith  <—- Dreamboat, former Pita-Partyer
:::::::: Nashville’s Dead  <—- That’s us!

So yeah! Come out and party and tell Halcyon happy birthday! Then we can all bike over to the house show on Elliott and watch Big&Tall, Lazy Magnet, Heavy Cream, and some others. Sound good? Good!

THE NEEDY INDEEDY [IN PICTURES]

This past Friday [Dec. 4th] was another great time over at the Glenn Danzig House. Everyone was great: Ben Steine’s Money made money, So Jazzy’s one of our new favorites on the block, Cy Barkley got ’em wild in the streets, Diarrhea Planet packed a million people on stage, and Daniel Pujol…. Well, that might’ve been the best Daniel Pujol show we’ve ever seen. He and the boys were spot-on and shelled out the hits and it was all we could’ve hoped for. Bekah Cope was there snapping photos, check em out!

CY BARKLEY

DIARRHEA PLANET

The boys at the House asked us to thank everyone for coming out, so: Thanks everyone for coming out!!

CRUSHING HARD ON TRISTEN

Twatting on the reg

Oh man, Tristen, you have recently come to find yourself on the receiving end of some major love over the last little while from some of our fave-New York babes [Like that tweet from #1 BK blogger, PopJew, up there] With that, Tristen’s recently been featured on Tunage, The Music Slut [check it out here] and lots of other places. Now, we know what you’re thinking: “Nashville’s Dead, are you really talking about Tristen right now? We thought you only talked about babes and JTB?” Well, yes we are talking about Tristen [who is a babe] and, hey, that’s not cool to assume that we don’t have a softie side [We don’t really. Promise. OK whatever, we kind of do] We’re always stoked to see more Nashville bands getting the recognition they deserve, especially when we know they’re Springsteen fans.

THOSE DARLINS: TOURING ON THE REG

Photo by Bekah Cope

Darlins Darlins Darlins…… you may be the babiest of the babes. And hard working ones at that. The Murfreesboro mamis [and papi] just announced a whole slew of 2010 tour dates, billed as the Excuse To Have Fun Tour. They just wrapped up a bunch of dates with the King Khan & BBQ Show [which you can read about here] and have a couple shows with Lucero before they’ll be home for a little while. If you haven’t watched that video we posted about YEAH! the other day, then you’re probably not aware of the show they’ve got there on Dec. 12th. It’s a benefit for YEAH! featuring Caitlin Rose, Six Gun Lullaby, and Those Darlins. Get on it!

And just to show how rad these girls are, check them out covering some KK+BBQ jams when the boys were a bit delayed and couldn’t make a few shows. Good goings.

Click that thing to see the tour dates…
