JOHN B THE BASED GOD

Looks like our favorite Mississippi bad boys are gonna be rolling through next week. Short notice, we know — but we’ll never complain about a Bass Drum of Death show. We wanna take this time to talk about an idea we had for old John Barrett: what about a Bass Drum of Death and Lil B the Based God collab? Based God of Death. That’d be pretty sick. Not to mention a pretty overwhelming amount of swag. Johnny B or Lil B, if either of you are reading this — let us know what we gotta do to make it happen. John and Colin are gonna be rolling through town on January 21st at The Other Basement after a few dates up on the east coast. Their new record that we’ve talked about a bunch, GB City, is slated to drop in February from Inflated Recs. Jump on it!

FOREVER TUFF

KYLE THOMAS

It’s been a long time since we mentioned anything to do with Kyle Thomas. Which seems a little unfair since the guy is one of the most productive rock and rollers of the last couple years. But we recently got some news that has us more stoked for this year than maybe anything else… the return of King Tuff! Don’t get us wrong, we’re down with Happy Birthday [who just did a Daytrotter session which you can check a track from below] but we are King Tuff-babies til we die. No word as to when we can expect any releases or a tour or anything, but you better believe we’ll keep you posted [And you better believe we’ll do everything we can to get King Tuff in Nashville] Until then, check an unreleased track below…

Happy Birthday – Evergreen [mp3]

You can listen to another version of “Evergreen” right here and watch a video of fireworks. And, if you haven’t yet, scoop it.

THE RUNDOWN – 1.10.11 – 1.16.11

We’re only a week and a half deep into the new year and we’re keeping everything rolling along with a lot of shows this week. Our favorite Jersey boys are coming through and you better believe it’ll be worth your efforts to fight some snow [if there is any] to go out to Glenn Danzig’s on Tuesday. Not to mention that it’ll also be the return of Ben Steine’s Money. So we guess that’s a win-lose situation for you, right? Anyways, don’t be a homebody — we’ll see you at the shows!

GIMMIE GIMMIE HUNX

After a million singles and 7″s from Hunx over the last two years and the Gay Singles comp from True Panther/Matador last year, we’ve been pining for more. We know you’re probably all feeling the same way because we all know how much you ladies love some homoerotic luvjams. Hunx and His Punx have got a full length coming out sometime this spring courtesy of Hardly Art [Which, from the looks of things, is going to probably be one of our favorite labels by the end of the year] You can probably expect it to sound like lots more of the same Ramones-y, hook-y, catchy rock and roll. Why would you want anything else? A new full length in the spring means a tour and you should all be fully aware that Hunx has a very big crush on a certain biker-boy about town. Maybe we’ll get our Punx on if we’re lucky. You can still pick up Gay Singles here.

SIC STUFFS

SIC ALPS

We mentioned a little while ago that Sic Alps have a new record, Napa Asylum, coming out in a few weeks courtesy of Drag City, but we felt like it deserved a little more than just a mention. Sic Alps are easily one of our favorite and most productive bands to come about in the last six or seven years [have fun trying to find copies of most of their earlier catalog though] Aside from being on last year’s Stuffs compilation, the boys have been relatively quiet since their L Mansion single. Which is why we’re so stoked for the new record. After hearing it a couple times, we really think they’re setting the bar high for 2011. Check out a track from the 22-song-double-LP down there if you don’t believe. You know how to believe, yeah…

REMEMBER WHEN THIS HAPPENED?

We know you’ve all been patiently waiting for the word to go and pick up your copies of the LIVE records from JEFF the Brotherhood and Jacuzzi Boys, and today is the day you can finally do it! If you paid for a copy of either record after the shows back in October, you can bring your receipt down there and pick up your split-colored black and blue vinyl LP from Third Man. We’ve listened to both of them a lot over the last few weeks and gotta say that, even if you didn’t pay for a copy that night, it’s necessary for you to go get a regular copy soon. It’s the closest anyone’s come to being able to capture what a JEFF show in Nashville is all about [the Battletapes DEAD AIR sesh does a pretty sick job too]

Doo it!

NEW YEAR, NEW BAND, NEW SINGLE, STILL FUN

A little earlier, we mentioned in THE RUNDOWN that we’d go into more detail about tonight’s show at Glenn Danzig’s House. We gotta do that for a couple reasons: [1] Two more bands have been added to the bill. [2] A brand new band is having their first show [3] A new single will be available for the first time. So let’s get started. Our buddies from Brooklyn, Natural Law, are coming through and found their way onto the show tonight. Don’t be bummed out about that though, they’re pretty sick. If you want a free download of their Spring Trash cassette that came out last year, go here and check it out. The other band added to the bill is Syrian Nukes Over Disneyland [you might know them better as “Every other band’s worst nightmare”] Slammers are the new kids around town, although they’re not really new to these parts at all. The band is Cy Barkley’s triumphant return to hardcore, so get stoked. The band also features Jamin Orrall [JEFF, Da Crumbz] on drums, Mimi Galbierz [Heavy Cream, Weiners] on bass and Josh Shearon [Cannomen, Cy Barkley & The Way Outsiders] on guitar. It’s so gnarly. And lastly, you can finally scoop up The Cannomen’s new Sex On The Bleach 7″ that we talked about a while ago. What better way to cure your early-New Year blues? HIT IT!
