WHILE WE'RE ON THE SUBJECT

Our buddies Black Lips just put out their latest video for “Let It Grow” It’s directed by Matt Dillmore and it features some weird stuff in it [mummies, kitten in a muzzle, astronautical dreams of yesteryear] The boys come back to town at the end of the month [Oct. 29] at Mercy Lounge with Turbo Fruits. They’ve been in the news alot lately [more specifically Jared] for getting a little rowdy in Brooklyn, but whatever.

NBN: WE FUN "IT'S LIKE ATHENS MINUS THE BULLSHIT"

WE FUN is going to be showing at The Belcourt tonight at 7:00. We caught the flick back last winter at The Belcourt really late one night at the first screening of the movie [we don’t really know how we ended up there, it was pretty much like 3 people and the dudes who made it] They’ve shown it a few other times at a few other places [including Halcyon Bike Shop] But a few weeks before we started this blog back in July, our good buddy BJ [Benjamin Jay Womack / Bobby Ubangi] passed away, and there was never really a good chance for us to say anything about it until now. BJay’s in this movie a million times, and how could he not be? It’s a movie about the Atlanta music scene and no one was as much a part of that as Bobby was. He was one of the original members of Carbonas and he was in Gaye Blades, The Lids, The Soft Spots, and his own solo band. There’s a lot of Bobby in the blood of Atlanta, trust us; but BJ was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer that then spread to his brain, liver, and pretty much everywhere else and at the age of 34 it got to him. We miss you buddy, and we’ll be wearing you proud to the movie tonight. Watching you read from Moby Dick is going to be tough.

Bobby put out a record, Inside the Mind of Bobby Ubangi, before passing that you can pick up here. It’s great. The guys over at Creative Loafing wrote a much better piece about BJ here. Bobby is a lover.

IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING HOW THE REATARDS WERE AT GONERFEST

We were there to see this, someone finally upped a video of the action though. We mentioned it earlier, but Jay’s backing band quit today/yesterday. None of the upcoming tour dates were cancelled though [The next show being October 15th] Hopefully someone can come out soon and shed a little light on what the deal is. Later bladers!

MAURICE SENDAK HATES CHILDHOOD AND JOY

In all honesty, we’re not sure if Where The Wild Things Are can live up to the hype that’s being created around it. But, there is this cool site featuring 24 artists inspired by said book. The photo above is a piece from Benjamin Marra. Blah blah blah… Here are a couple shots someone snagged from a sneak preview…

It’s a slow day.

SOOOO…

In a short 8 days, one of us is going to be hitting the road for a couple weeks with Natural Child. Now, they’ll be doing a little running “tour diary” kind of bologna bit for us over here at the Deadquarters, but we’re still probably going to be lacking in content for the duration of their tour. That’s where you come in! I mean, you won’t get paid, you won’t get free shit, you won’t get any groupies, you won’t be recognized within the Nashville community, we probably won’t hang out with you outside of the inter-blogblag super speedway, but still! If you think you can bone up a good submission piece [It can be about anything really, we just want to find people who fit the feel of what we’re doing, ‘na mean?] shoot it over to nashvillesdead[at]gmail[dot]com. We’ll respond to everything we get [Even if we don’t like it, we’ll be like “It’s not you, it’s us. I mean, I love you but I’m not in love with you.”]

If that’s not really your thing, maybe you should sign up to try and be in Jay Reatard’s band since he and the boys took a trip to Splitsville.

NEW KIDZ ON THE BLOCK

Remember when LSD was cool? When people wore bellbottoms and still thought the Beatles were relevant? When psychedelic was really psychedelic? We don’t cause we’re fourteen, but we’d like to think that The Looking Glass was what music sounded like then. They’re a brand new band of kids playing the best 60’s style psychedelia this side of the century, and word has it they might be playing a certain special someone’s record release party. Remember, we told you about them first.

OUR 5th FAVORITE HOLIDAY

Little ones, we’re not going to lie [and it’s not like you couldn’t have guessed it] but the thing we look forward to most about Next Big Nashville is the Infinity Cat Records Showcase. Seriously, the last couple years of this show have been some of our all-time favorite times in Nashville. Here’s a little rundown of this year’s show for you…

SHREDDERS
We talked for a minute or two about Shredders the other day [Remember? We posted that video of the two dudes head banging in the jungle.] They got added to the bill last minute and we couldn’t be more stoked to see them again. A real treat. Real treeeeat.

WRIGHT’S JAMBULIYEAH FEST
Eric Wright’s new project featuring Nathan Vasquez and Reid Barber. WILDDD. I mean, these guys are the same babes from Deluxin’, No Compassion, and Reid & Wright so you know it’s gonna be pretty good.

CY [BARKLEY]

The new project from EMP’s Cy Barkley featuring Cannomen/Kintaro’s Josh Shearon on bass and Kintaro/Natural Child’s Zach Martin on drums. Cy and the boys bash out some real gnarly early-80s garage punk. Think Jay Reatard / Marked Men / Carbonas type of stuff. In other words, it’s the kind of thing you want to listen to/see.

The punky brewster dude supergroup that we’ve talked plenty about. Comprised of members of Life Trap, Murdock, Kintaro, and Fantastic Butt. Loud and fast, spliffs and riffs to the max. They just put out their Demo Vol. 2, so be sure to snag a copy at the show.

The last time we saw Denney & his Jets all we could think was, “This is the music Nashville wishes it was known for.” Really, some of the most sincere songwriting that you’ll find during Next Big Nashville [or anywhere, for that matter]

Daniel’s got a newly revamped lineup that we talked about last week and his tunes are sounding better than ever. Talk about hard working dudes…. Daniel just put out his own zine, is working on a new 7″, is playing Oct. 5th with Dan Deacon and Oct. 6th in St. Louis with JEFF and Screaming Females.

Imagine if The Rolling Stones and The Beatles had a baby who loved punk rock but couldn’t ever shake mom and dad’s influence. We think that would sound something close to Natural Child. We talk about these guys pretty regularly and for good reason: they rock and roll. They’ve got a 7″ coming out soon on Infinity Cat [more about that later though]

Our favorite mondo-babes will be surfing the magma ’til the break of dawn, and we’ll all be surfing right along with them. We know they’ve been working out some new tunes, so maybe they’ll treat our little ears at the show. If you haven’t scooped up their 7″, you should definitely get on that soon because they’re going fast.

Nashville’s favorite sons. Do we have to talk about JEFF? You know them. You know how we feel about them. Sooo… Yeah. Do it. Their new album HEAVY DAYS comes out Oct. 13th. Pre-order it here and get exclusives!

You can pick up recordings from most of the artists above on the Infinity Cat website. Trust us, you’re going to want to be at this show. It’s the best $5 you’ll spend this year [Unless someone sells you a car or a house or something awesome for $5. But still.]

IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING HOW JEFF'S TOUR WENT

The tour video was filmed/edited by Sarah Carter. The footage comes from JEFF’s recent tour out west with Ted Leo and Ty Segall, and it looks like it was a ball. The song that plays at the beginning of the video is Natural Child’s “Shamewalkin'” Stay tuned for a Retired Segalls [JEFF+Ty Segall] video.
