KINGS OF POWER POP

So word on the street is that there’s a new Nerves comp coming soon from our faves Volar Records and I Hate Rock n Roll. I guess it’s not so much “word on the street” as much as it is just the word everywhere. It’s called Under the Covers Vol. 2: A Tribute to Paul Collins, Peter Case, and Jack Lee [You know, The Nerves] Anyways, the comp features covers from Davila 666, Grass Widow, Hunx & His Punx, Moonhearts, and a ton of other goodys. You can hear a couple samplings from the compilation at both Volar’s myspace and I Hate RnR’s myspace. And you can check out the full tracklist after the hump. It’ll see an initial release on cassette followed by a vinyl release [1000 pressed — first 200 on multicolored vinyl] Orders aren’t available yet, but be on the lookout…

Seriously, click here and go listen to Davila’s cover. Better than fucking Blondie.

NEVER SURRENDER FOREVER

We know we should’ve probably mentioned this earlier, but what can ya do? Our favorite Milwaukee maniac, Juiceboxxx, has been in town for a couple days now and the dudes over at Danzig’s house have thrown together quite the little show for him. Actually, it’s not that little. It’s with the Bogus Bros and a new band called Just Buddyz [apparently they’ve never practiced and have no fully written songs — if you like laughs, you’ll love it — if you got no soul, come twenty minutes late] The other word on the street is that Juiceboy and brothers Orrall have been teaming up on some new material together [don’t think rap-rock, think more Odelay-era Beck or something] Anyways, come out tonight and party hard because it’s back to school time and the best way to start the semester off is by getting wild with your friends and then forgetting to do homework. But, in all seriousness, do your homework.

DANNY UNLEAHSED

IT’S HERE! IT’S HAPPENING RIGHT NOW! DANNY, the debut LP from our favorite rag-tag team of creamers, is available!! If you’re not stoked on that, you probably just don’t like fun or rock and roll. And if you don’t like either of those things, then you might wanna move to a different city — knowwhatimean?? Nashville’s saving rock and roll one band at a time, and Heavy Cream is undoubtedly one of the leaders. Their new video for “Watusi” says it all: leather jackets, back of trucks, smoke, ouija boards, and beers on the run….. And if you really wanna celebrate and do things right, hit up the release show tonight. We’re DJing alongside JEFF the B-hood and there’s gonna be booze and Heavy Cream and Those Darlins and dress like it’s the 70s and fuuuuun. Too stoned.

See you tonight, my dougies. It’s gonna be  a party.

TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT

We’re posting a little last minute on this on, but only because we’ve been so busy getting ready to serve up some great shows in the next month. Tomorrow night we’re kicking off with A Giant Dog, Rayon Beach, Cy Barkley and Big Surr. A Giant Dog is the side project of Orville Neeley from Bad Sports (you know how we feel about them). With A Giant Dog, Orville trades in the punk for catchy and hard-hitting rock & roll. Seriously, non-stop hooks with that band. Non-stop hooks. Next up is Rayon Beach. You might know these Austin bebes from their 12″ EP on Hozac. We know them for their beat-driven, super blown-out garage jams. Between those two bands and the ol’ 1-2 punch that Cy and Big Surr regularly provide, this is one of the best bills we’ve seens in a while. In fact, we don’t think we’ve been this excited about a show since….oh yeah…the last show at Glenn Danzig’s House! See you sweet baby janes tonight.

GETTING VIOLATED

Kurt Vile, who we’ve talked about on here a couple times already, is finally making his first trip to Nashville! You can catch him October 23rd at Mercy Lounge with The Soft Pack [who seem to be making Nashville an every-3-months sort of thing] Kurt just got done with a tour opening for Fucked Up and releasing a new EP on Matador Records. We’re gonna get our long-haired-reverby vocals-dreamy guitar-rock and roll on. Yayee Yayee. Here’s a couple choice nugs and little serenade he did for our Fader babes.

NEW RAINY DAY MUSIC

It’s been a weird non-stop back and forth between burning hot and soaking wet the last few days here in our fair city, and since our music tastes are so dependent on the weather — we’ve been equally as scattered. We did find something that we can listen to in both conditions though: this new split 7″ featuring two new Beets tracks and two tracks from Cassie Ramone [Vivian Girls — The Babies] solo work. It’s the first release that Cassie’s solo stuff has gotten so far, so be sure to check it out. The record’s available here from Psychic Lunch Records – there are only 300 copies so be sure to snag it now.

DRINK UP AND BE COUNTED

THE OUTDOORSMEN

Well would you look at that — another West Coast band that we’ve got ourselves all riled up about. Who’d a thunkit? The Outdoorsmen, from sunny San Francisco, have been making their way around the country with some of the gnarlier stuff we’ve heard in the last while. It’s brash and abrasive and sorta sloppy and sounds like they couldn’t rock themselves out of closet — but that’s pretty much our bag, right? They’ve had a couple releases so far [a couple cassettes and a 7″ on Goodbye Boozy] but they’ve got some more lined up for the very near future [singles with Daggerman and Clown College] Needless to say, we’re pretty stoked. They’re not coming Nashy-side for a while, but they are playing this year’s GonerFest — so since you’re already going to that, make sure you check them out.
