TWO AND A HALF TIMES AROUND

If you came out to Third Man on Friday night and caught Cheap Time’s set — consider yourself having witnessed one of the most solid sets of Next Big Nashville. Their new LP, Fantastic Explanations [And Similar Situations], is out today on In The Red. We’ve been listening to it for the last little bit and it sounds like they’re definitely trying to explore some new grounds as a band. Most of it is classic glammy Cheap Time – Jeffrey Novak stylee in the same vein as his solo album [ After the Ball — LMN Records] but you won’t find too many of the snotty punk jams on this one. The bad boys also just had a new bootleg come out. You can snag it from them on tour or from the Goner store here. It’s primarily a collection of live takes o WFMU and a few unreleased demos. So good.

Cheap Time – Woodland Drive [mp3]

Jeffrey and the boys are about to head on a European tour later this week. If you see them around town, buy them a couple beers. Pick up the new album here.

TY SEGALL [IN PICS]

We’re a little late on getting these up but whatever, we’ve been sorta busy. Ty Segall came through last Tuesday and brought with him one of the best shows we’ll probably get to see all year. Did anyone keep track of how many covers they did that night? There was some Sabbath — some Redd Kross — anything else? Anyways, it felt good to finally bring Ty through and do it right. Word on the street is that he’ll be touring again later this winter-time, and we don’t know how he could keep Nashville outta the mix after a show like this one. Bekah Cope was there and got lots of sick pics [including some of the first D. Watusi live shots] Check em out… And that video up at the top is courtesy of our buddy David Allen. Thanks dogggie

BEFORE WE GO ANY FURTHER

We just wanna say thanks to everyone who went out to shows over the weekend or helped put shows together or had fun or played a show or whatever. Especially the people who helped us with our shows [You know who you are, Persecution Smith] Friday and Saturday night were two of the most fun nights we’d had in a long while. Well, throw Tuesday night in there too [that show was outta control] But for serious, thanks everyone for making last week one for the books. We’ve got a couple treats we’ve been working on for you — including maybe a whole new design and layout to make it easier for you to revisit old videos and stuff like that. Ok, yeah, anyways — one last time — Thank you.

TIME TO GET YOUR KICKS

We’ve been running around all week trying to get stuff done [you can probably tell from the lack of posts] Anyways, today is the big day. Or one of the big days. Third Man printed up some more presale tickets yesterday for both shows — so it’s your last chance to pick up guaranteed spots inside [Trust us. You wanna make sure you’re gonna be in there] Anyways, here’s all the info for Friday and Saturday night:

FRIDAY OCTOBER 1

CY BARKLEY [ 8:30 ]
Blackout [mp3]

It’s the one year birthday of Cy Barkley this Friday night at Third Man. They debuted at last year’s Next Big Nashville on Infinity Cat night. Since then they’ve blown us away over and over again every time we’ve seen them. I mean, there’s really no excuse for any of you to have not caught atleast one Cy Barkley show at this point — but if you still haven’t, this is the perfect chance.

HEAVY CREAM [ 9:00 ]
Watusi [mp3]

If you live here and aren’t a fan of Heavy Cream — you must just not like having fun. The Dream Creamers have been working hard over the last year playing basements, living rooms, stages, backyards…… anywhere and everywhere. Their debut LP just came out earlier this summer on Infinity Cat and it’s easily one of our favorite records to come out this year [Perfect summer jams] We can’t really put into words how much we love these bebes. Lately they’ve been doing this thing where they blow us away more than they did the time before — it’s pretty sick.

CHEAP TIME [ 9:30 ]
Permanent Damage [mp3]

We’re just gonna start this off by saying Cheap Time’s new LP [out on In The Red soonly] is fucking awesome. Jeffrey Novak’s gotta be one of this town’s hardest working rock and rollers. Fresh off a nice stint at GonerFest — they’re gonna blow minds and get kicks. Catch them before they head over to Europe for a bit.

THE ETTES [ 10:15 ]
Love Lies Bleeding [mp3]

The Ettes are a band we haven’t spent too much time talking about because, well, they’re just never really around or playing local shows. They did, however, spend a lot of time with Mr. Third Man himself while on tour with The Dead Weather. We mentioned them a bit ago in our GonerFest post when we talked about Parting Gifts. If Greg Cartwright’s not a selling point — you’re on the wroooong site.

JEFF THE BROTHERHOOD [ 11:00 ]
Diamond Way [mp3]

Ok, let’s get deep and sappy and sentimental for a minute in a real way. JEFF the Brotherhood is kind of the only reason we started doing this thing. They’re our absolute favorite band — call that what you will, it’s just the truth. When I think of all the best moments of my life, 95% of them have been at JEFF shows. A couple months ago, DD666 moved up to New York to pursue his academic career. The day after he left, JEFF had a show at Exit/In and at the end of their set they played “The Tropics” followed immediately by “Cancer Killer” for Dee. That’s probably the only time I will ever cry and then stagedive. JEFF is probably the only band that can make me feel like that. We’ll be recording their set live to tape tomorrow night and pressing a record from it. If it comes anywhere close to capturing the energy and brotherhood of a JEFF show in Nashville — we’ll be happy. If Jake or Jamin are reading this — I’m sorry I’m such a fanboy, but thank you.

SATURDAY OCTOBER 2

D. WATUSI [ 9:00 ]
High School Baby [mp3]

Newest kids on the block. But they’ve all actually been around the block a time or two already. In their first month together as a band they’ve played 4 shows [this one being their 5th] and it doesn’t look like they’re planning on stopping anytime soon. We’re stoked about it. You oughtta be too.

TURBO FRUITS [ 9:30 ]
Mama’s Mad [mp3]

Turbo Fruits are actually on tour but somehow found a way to make it here for this special show. We so glad. The Fruits boys have been on tour for what seems like the last 2 years pretty non-stop. Looks like it’s paying off too. Jonas is heading up Turbo Time Records and the bebes are playing this year’s Bruise Cruise festival [get tix here] They posted lots of new goodies on their myspace in the last couple weeks – check it.

PUJOL [ 10:15 ]
DeathMask [mp3]

The bad boys are blowing up. In the last couple weeks they’ve been featured on SPIN and Nylon and all over the here-and-there-everywhere [It’s about time everyone wised-up] They’ll have two new releases available — a Blue Series 7″ featuring Black Rabbit and Too Safe and the Live EP from their show at Third Man earlier this year with Nobunny. Scoop em both.

JACUZZI BOYS [ 11:00 ]
Bricks Or Coconuts [mp3]

Miami’s finest are coming back and we can only hope it’s half as good as the last time they were here. The J-Boys have been showing people all over the nation how to get their kicks. I mean, they showed us how to get ours. Their debut LP, No Seasons, came out earlier this year on Florida’s Dying and we’re about due for a new copy since we’ve worn through the first one. You’ll be able to add a new Jacuzzi Boys record to your collection sometime after this show because we’ll be recording this one straight to tape too [Yes, that means this will also be a Live LP like the JEFF one and the PUJOL one] More than anything we are stoked to have the bebes back so we can party hard all weekend Miami-stylee. Chu know.

——————————————

So there it is — the two best shows of Next Big Nashville. We’ll be doing lots of other stuff at the shows like partying hard and dancing and giving things away — so make sure you get out and come to this one. They both only cost $5. Get your kicks.

IT'S TY TO GO SOLO

We forgot to make mention of this earlier, but better late than never. We talked Ty into doing a special solo performance at Grimey’s tomorrow afternoon before the big show later on that night at The End. We’re hooking you bebes up with all the special treats this week. Now, we’re not sure if it’s just gonna be Ty doing his thing on the ones and twos by himself or if he’s gonna go all out one-man-band stylee. Either way — stoked. He just got done doing a couple shows at GonerFest and they were wild. Anyways, come out and see the bad boy in the flesh and blood two times in one night. It’ll probably sound something like this…

JENNY & JOHNNY & TYVEK HANGING WITH JACKY

Those Third Man dougies are really piling it on this week [Show Sunday, show Monday, biggest best shows ever on Friday and Saturday, and a couple new releases on top] They announced the other day that they’re bringing sweet little red-head betty, Jenny Lewis, in for a special Jenny & Johnny show and then announced that your favorite D-town rockers, Tyvek, are gonna play on Monday night. Both of the shows are only $3 and are sure to be well worth your money. Tyvek came through last Spring at Little Hamilton and we think they’ll probably come across much better inside Third Man’s big blue room. Anyways, hit ittt
