PUNK DUB LUV

We’ve been listening to this new Anika record for a couple days and it’s really sort of blowing our minds. Especially after doing a little more research on it. Anika was a political journalist in Berlin when she met Geoff Barrow [Portishead] Geoff’s other band, Beak>, was looking for a female singer so they started working on some stuff together and after a 12-day recording sesh — they have this S/T album to show for it. It’s kind of a crazy mix of punk and dub and 60s girl group with a little bit of trash thrown in. We’ll be the first to say that dub isn’t typically our bag — but something about this has got us hooked. Maybe it’s the reverby drums or something. Don’t know. But whatever. Bebe girl does a pretty sick cover of Ray Davies’ “I Go To Sleep”. Along with that Yoko Ono cover down there, and up there. Hit it mami! The record will see a US release in December from Stones Throw so keep an eye out.

TIME FOR SOME FREE PIZZA

Not sure if you guys are aware of this — but we love Liquor Store. Very easily one of our favorite bands in the world right now. The bebs are gonna be back in the new year for a stop at Danzig’s and it’s gonna be a for real party. Look at that lineup — Liquor Store: New Jersey’s finest like a modern-day Bruce Springsteen for the jerking class, Natural Child: Los ninos natural will whet hyour whistle and show you a real good time, Cy Barkley: the one and only will annihilate anyone in his way, and Ben Steine’s Money: potentially their only show for the 2k11 you won’t want to miss it. Shoot, maybe we’ll even get some free pizza for the show in celebration of Liquor Store’s new Free Pizza 7″. Hit it…

I HAVE NO BLOOD

MI$$I$$IPPI LEAN

Along with Bass Drum of Death and Unwed Teenage Mothers, FLIGHT is making Mississippi look like one of the best places for rock bands to spring from… must be something in the drugs. I guess we shouldn’t just pigeon-hole FLIGHT as “rock” though — shit’s like a grungey drug-binged pill-infused cough-syrup-sipping dreamboat. So sort of like if Three 6 Mafia took some rock and roll and decided to give it some choppd and screwd treatment. If that doesn’t sound like your bag, then you probably won’t wanna watch his new video for “Turn to Blood” [the single off the recently released The Lead Ringers EP from Zoo Music — snag a copy quick there’s only a few left] We’ve been trying to work out getting the bad boys up here for a show for the last long while [was supposed to happen in July, again in October, round three will hopefully go better] Watch their new vid after the click…

CHEVEU POUR VOUS

Cheveu in Israel

Les incompetent… Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soire… we don’t know much French, but we get down on some French music pretty regularly. One of the best French bands going right now, Cheveu, have a new album dropping at the end of the month sometime courtesy of Born Bad Records [same label that put out their killer Like A Deer in The Headlight 7″ earlier this year… might be able to scoop one from SSR if you don’t want to pay international prices] We haven’t had a chance to listen to anything off the new record, but we feel pretty safe saying that we think it’ll be ace. I mean, most everything these guys have done is solid — so why should we believe otherwise? Obviously we will judge for ourselves when the record comes out, but we have faith. Feels good man… Hard to say no to French garage rock and roll that makuh you afeel dirty. Was that a French accent?

Pick up some of their records here.

RIDIN’ THE WAVE

BEINVENIDOS A MIAMI

SNAKEHOLE

We’ve been on a total girl-band binge lately. I mean, just look at some of the posts we’ve made over the last couple weeks [Midnite Snaxxx, Shannon & The Clams, Kelli Peach, blah blah blah] Can’t really pinpoint why we’re so hooked on it right now, but we’re not gonna complain either. Snakehole is a brand new band hanging down in the Miami heat featuring three total bebes. What’s better than mamis rocking and rolling? NOTHING! Seriously, sometimes people ask us “Nashville’s Dead, what would your perfect girl be like?” and we say “We like the strong bettys that got mind of their own and rock and roll in their hearts.” Snakehole seems to fit that pretty well. Check out some tunes on their Facebook page or their myspace, and if you’re in the Flahdah area — catch them at Zitfest in mid-December [along with a ton of other sick bands… check out the lineup below]

WANDERING WONDERING

We love Los Beets. And the love doesn’t stop with just them. Juan Wauters [pictured above] writes a good majority of all The Beets songs himself. He self-released a cassette a little under two years ago and the majority of those songs have become Beets jams [It’s since then been rereleased on Captured Tracks for everyone that missed out the first go-round] Bad boy just put out another new cassette of some solo works on Captured Tracks called Wandering Wondering. It’s got a lot of things we really like on it: jangly acoustic guitars, Spanish lyrics, luv… Everything you’d expect from Juan. Check out a track we ripped for you below…

BEHOLD THE WILLIAM TYLER

Feels like we were making a post just yesterday about WFMU showing one of Nashville’s favorite sons, William Tyler, some much deserved love. Today it looks like he’s getting even more of that from the bad boys [good boys? good boys and girls? Are we obligated to be more PC with them?] over at NPR just put up his new album, Behold The Spirit, in it’s entirety for streaming. You can listen to it there until November 23rd — and we highly recommend you do [it’s pretty perfect listening for days like today] Like we’ve said before, the new album will be available for purchase on the 23rd [Word on the street is that it’ll be a limited vinyl run of 500 but CDs will be available as well — so be ready] Willy’s also gonna be opening for Yo La Tengo on February 1st at Exit/In. You can go ahead and snag tickets for that too.

Album art and tracklist below…

DANCING IN THE STREET

It’s been a minute since we’ve checked in with our favorite Texas boys [Seriously, these three guys make up like 7 of our favorite Denton/Austin bands] but we checked out the Bad Sports myspace the other day and found that they’ve got some new jams up. Looks like the bad boys have found themselves set to release a new record on Dirtnap in early 2011. We can’t really think of a better place for the boys. We can’t wait to get our hands on them [especially “Teenage Girls” — that song is a hit] If you still haven’t picked up their S/T album that came out at the tail end of last year from Douchemaster, get on it! We’ll let it slide if you put it on your year-end lists. Here’s that track from their split 7″ that came out a little bit ago courtesy of VICE/Scion…

Bad Sports – Would You Wait For Me Too? [mp3]

Scoop their LP here. And, if you haven’t already, check out Daniel’s other band VIDEO [so sick]
