THE RUNDOWN – 10.27.2014 – 11.2.2014

Rundown

It’s Spook Week. Time to dust off your Goblin records, put the final touches on that Jimmy Pesto Jr. outfit, and of course, go to some shows. Tonight you could see Ri¢hie, Fox Fun, or Harvest Team depending on where you land, tomorrow is Screaming Females and PUJOL at the Stone Fox, Halloween brings us killer shows at Fort Houston, the Cage, and Exit/In, the great TIMMY’S ORGANISM will be at Foobar Too on Saturday, and Reigning Sound will make their way to Mercy Lounge on Sunday. This week looks so good it’s scary — LOL >:)

FUCK YOU, YOU’RE A TURD

THE CONEHEADS

THE CONEHEADS

The South might have given us country, blues, jazz, rock and roll, hip hop, and just about every other brand of American music, but we should never forget that it’s the Midwest who gave us PUNK. Somewhere in that flattened abyss of corn, windmills, and rust there must be a Fountain of Frustration, a crossroads unto itself where all the greats sold their soul not for the promise of technical ability, but rather just SOME form of excitement.

The most recent group in this lineage of punk royalty are THE CONEHEADS. Before we get into it, you should know that there’s next to zero information about these guys online. We know that they’re from Northwest Indiana [somewhere between Merrillville and Hammond, best we can tell], the guitar player is sixteen [so we can only assume the others are in close proximity], and they just released their debut cassette, Total Conetrol. Beyond that, your guess is as good as ours, but take one listen and you’ll see how much this shit rules. Weirdo Devo vocals, guitar that sounds like VOID through a DI box, and some truly shit-hot drums. We can’t find the cassette available for purchase anywhere, but you can download it in full here. While you’re at it, check out this live video from two days ago. Unreal.

DOO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN

A lot has happened since we last checked in with JEFF. They’ve got a new LP in the can, a new EP already out, they’ve toured across the country and back with local buds D. Watusi, Music Band, and Diarrhea Planet, and now they’re bringing it on home with a three-night stint at the End later this week. You’ll get different openers each night, and an anonymous source tells us we’ll even get a different set each night from the Brotherhood of Light.

Story time: I remember JEFF playing at the End with Hunx and His Punx and Shannon and the Clams in 2011. Their set came to a peak [as they do] with a pretty large chunk of the audience climbing onstage for the remainder of the show. It was a mostly familiar wild-style good time, but something definitely felt different. In that moment I thought, “I doubt I will ever be able to see JEFF play here again.” For three years, that prophecy has proven to be true, but wow. Look at that flier. What a groovy gift we have been given.

JOURNEY THROUGH THE PAST

JUST 2 DUDES

The two most common conversation points when talking about Nashville’s longstanding music history are its established role as the Country Music Capital Capital of the World and the nearly equally cemented outcry that “There’s more than just country music here!” There is a gray area to be found though, and it’s easily one of the most fascinating pieces of this history. It’s a time and place where some the biggest names in popular music came to town to record with a crew of country’s most elite session musicians, it’s where American classics like Blonde on Blonde, Harvest, and Sweetheart of the Rodeo came to fruition, and it’s the subject the newest exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame.

What tasty treats can we hope to find in Dylan, Cash, and the Nashville Cats: A New Music City? The Byrds’ Nudie suits? Kenny Buttrey’s “Lay Lady Lay” bongos? Leonard Cohen’s ticket stub from seeing Brewster McCloud at the Belcourt [a James Cathcart legend]? We’ll have to wait til March 27 to find out. Something tells me we have a cold, long winter ahead of us.

Honor Thy Hermycaf

Hermitage Cafe

Hermitage Cafe

We received some very sad local news this weekend. Ms. Linda, the kind-hearted waitress at downtown staple all-night diner Hermitage Cafe, has recently been diagnosed with stage 3 cancer. If you have not had the pleasure of spending time at Hermitage, there’s really nothing not to love about it. From the generous artist-budget meal of biscuits and coffee to the faded country headshots juxtaposed with hand-drawn menu items, it has held its place as one of the cornerstones of Nashville’s character as a city. And probably the most memorable part of the Hermitage Cafe experience is seeing the same waitress, Linda, pretty much every time you stop by.

Our buddy Daniel Pujol recalls that Linda “let me order water and coffee for 7 years so I could write MEEMAW lyrics, all my college papers, and PUJOL lyrics.” Linda has helped us all out over the years. Now it’s our turn to help her. Donations will be accepted here. Every little bit helps

EIGHT MILES HYE

-1

PETER STRINGER-HYE

Cast your vote now: is Peter Stringer-Hye the busiest musician in Nashville? He first came on the scene playing bass in Paperhead and has since added part-time D. Watusi bassist and full-time Promised Land Sound guitarist to his résumé. Now after a live debut at Freakin’ Weekend V [shout-out Nashville Scene’s Best Show of 2014], he’s making a rare solo appearance at the Stone Fox on Saturday. Of all his various projects, this is where Peter’s raw talent shines through most as he nestles into his natural Big Star/Byrds state. Go ahead and listen to “Sunday Girls” below for a taste, but make sure you go to Stone Fox Saturday night to get the full serving. Now who’s gonna be the first person to wise up and sign this lil Chilton?
