DEAD AIR – EPISODE 2

EPISODE 2: GET LIVE
BEN STEINE’S MONEY
SO JAZZY
PUJOL
NATURAL CHILD
JEFF THE BROTHERHOOD

Well, this month’s DEAD AIR is a gift from us and Battletapes to celebrate the TwentyTen. No streaming on these because they’re too long, but go ahead and treat yourselves to live sets from Ben Steine’s Money, So Jazzy, PUJOL, Natural Child, and JEFF the Brotherhood. All were recorded on June 4, 2010 LIVE at The End — Here’s more from Battletapes about it…

By Jeremy Ferguson (Battle Tapes Recording, Nashville)

When Candice got her breast cancer diagnosis, the bills immediately started piling up. Various friends/acquaintances/clients offered help and a few benefit shows were set up very easily. However, the two benefits we had planned were mostly older bands or people around our age (early 30s) and we thought “We haven’t tapped that youth market yet… Expendable income! Allowance from their parents!” I contacted our financial consultants, Daniel Pujol and Ben Todd and ran the idea by them. They responded with a surround sound recording of a cash register saying “cha-ching!” and we scheduled the date. However, as much as most old people want to steal from the youth, guilt punched us in our hearts at the last moment and we took Candice’s Tascam 388, 4 reels of NOS Quantegy 457 tape, and some mics and cables to the End the night of the benefit show to document the exploitation. We thought we would capture video with multiple angles for a to-be-issued hologram but that fell through utterly and completely. Instead, we were left with only the archaic tape recorder and let it roll. What you hear is 8 tracks of tape hiss, distorted guitars, sometimes distorted drums, vocals cutting in and out, mistakes, pops and ticks, unplugged vocal mics, stage-divers moving drum mics or unplugging guitars… Basically, the sweat and screams of Nashville’s youth on a night where the participating bands decided to help us fight back against the outrageous medical bills anyone can expect if they get real sick in America, even if they have insurance. In the end, our board of directors said that it was all “too nasty” to release in Best Buy stores across the world and I said “Well, if someone who’s buying a new bluetooth headset can’t buy these recordings, no one will!” And so, on Christmas day every year since you were born, we celebrate and listen to these live sets by Ben Steine’s Money, So Jazzy, PUJOL, Natural Child, and Jeff The Brotherhood and remember where we thought we were the first time we figured out what downloading was. Thanks to Presidents Nashville’s Dead for our freedom.
