THIS WORLD IS BEAT

R-5930215-1406941449-1577

After a crippling debut and more break-ups than we could keep up with, it seems that Hank Wood and the Hammerheads are officially back with their second full-length, and we could not be happier. The record’s called Stay Home, and it’s amazing. It’s not often in this day and age that you can find a band who are original enough to create a sound much their own and also bold enough to build upon that sound rather than sticking to the template, but that’s exactly what the Hammerheads have done. First impression has us feeling this one is a little less abrasive, a little less brutal. The weirdness is still there though, the songs are quality, and the band truly functions as a BAND. From vocals to cowbell and guitar to organ, no component is any more or less important than the others.

So far copies of the record appear to have only been sold on the band’s recent West Coast tour and at Dripper World in Brooklyn, but you can go ahead any download it here (don’t feel guilty, the label posted that link). For real though, this shit sounds like hardcore Gun Club or something, and you NEED to hear it. Keep your eyes on Katorga Works for physical copies.

QUEEN INSIDE YR BRAIN

It feels like just yesterday that we were jamming and rocking and carrying on to PUJOL at Freakin’ Weekend V. Even though many moons have passed since then, we have a little something to remember that faithful night now. The fine folks at Philthy Phonographic Records have just released a flexi disc of “No Words” live from FWV! Check out the video below to get the full experience of ordering. In other Puj News, there’s a new video for the song “Youniverse” filmed in Philadelphia by main man Perry Shall. Pick up the flexi here, and if you haven’t already, purchase “Kludge” here.

DOO IT

Our beloved Bogus Bros will be hitting the road this week with fellow locals D. Watusi. The last we saw JEFF was at the East Room – they had a whole new band and a handful of new songs to boot. The lineup features Chet Jameson (Cy Barkley & The Way Outsiders) and Kunal Prakash (Viva L’American Death Ray Music). Word on the street is they just finished their new record, which will probably see light sometime later this year. As for D. Watusi, a new album will soon be in the works. If you’ve seen them play in the last few months, chances are you’ve heard a sneak peek.

Check the dates to see if the boys and girl are coming to a town near you, and as a wise man once said…
DON’T THINK ABOUT IT, WELL ALL YOU’VE GOT TO DO IS — DOO IT! WRITE ABOUT IT HONEY, THEN WE’LL JUST — DOO IT!”

Sun’s Out, Gunn’s Out

Steve Gunn

Steve Gunn

Steve Gunn released one of our favorite records of 2013 with his amazing “Time Off.” Safe to say that this record and William Tyler‘s “Impossible Truth” provided a personal push to delve further into American folk music of the early 20th century generally and American Primitivism of the mid 1960s specifically. Gunn is back with a second LP, titled “Way Out Weather,” and from the sounds of it, is picking up where he left off with a full band, snapshot-by-snapshot exploration as appropriate on the Blue Ridge as the PCH. The first single, “Milly’s Garden,” is a trip worth taking. “Way Out Weather” is due out on October 7 from Paradise of Bachelors.

WALK OUR WAY

PETER WALKER

Peter Walker began his career as a guitarist in 1959. In 1965, he became the music director for Timothy Leary’s LSD experiments, and that next year, he released his quintessential Rainy Day Raga. By the ’70s, Walker had stepped away from the public eye in favor of a more peaceful family life, but his playing did not stop there. Shifting his focus to flamenco guitar, he traveled to Spain to further hone his craft. Finally brought out of retirement in 2007 by the fine folks at Tompkins Square, Walker has spent the last few years touring sporadically and recording new material.

All of this is build-up to tell you that thee Peter Walker is making a rare appearance at Third Man Records this Friday, and it would be a shame to miss out on such a special opportunity. As if you need any further reason to go, our #1 Nashville hero William Tyler will provide opening duties. Really though, the dude has kept some great company (Sandy Bull and Karen Dalton anyone?), and he’s done some truly amazing work himself. Don’t miss this opportunity!

Tickets are available for purchase now through Third Man.
