NOBODY’S FOOL

It’s not often that we break away from our usual private pressing, Party God, punk-drunk-love dribble, but we saw something special last night. There’s no denying that Nashville has undergone a sea change in the last few years. Twenty-somethings and creative-types have flocked in by the hundreds, older homes have given way to skinny condos, and countless magazine spreads have been published all as a byproduct of our new “It City” status. That’s not to say that the change has been all bad. Better show attendance, national coverage, and artisan plum-saki ice cream are all great things. It’s just too easy at times to forget what (and who) made Nashville so great in the first place, yet that seems to be the exact focus of Stone Fox proprietor/top lady Elise Tyler’s new photo show, No Fool No Fun.

Says Elise, “As a Southerner, I was raised to treat everyone, even strangers, as a neighbor, and you must love your neighbor as you love yourself. When I take someone’s portrait, this deeply engrained upbringing guides my eye. I look to connect with each person, to love them if only for a few seconds, and to see the beauty that lingers on their face after that perfect expression is captured.

No Fool No Fun is on display at 444 Humphreys Pop Up and Galleries for the rest of the month.

Country Funk Vol. 2

Country Funk Vol. 2

Good news everyone! Light in the Attic will be releasing another awesome bout of funky country songs, in the aptly named Country Funk Vol. 2 compilation. And, of course, it catalogues the sweet, sweet spot between genre traditionalism and progressivism in the late 60s and early 70s. Compiled by LA coolguy Zach Cowie of Turquoise Wisdom, Country Funk Vol. 2 will feature some names we know and love — Bobby Darin, Townes Van Zandt, Dolly Parton — and plenty of new ones to explore, too. Summer’s the time for all kinds of exploration! Let this be your jumping off point for a summer mix part 2 and don’t forget to sleep plenty, write alot and do more pushups than you did yesterday. Preorder the LP soon, as it ships on July 9th. ONWARD

FORGET ME NOTS

nots

NOTS

Nots have been kicking around in Memphis for a couple years now, but it seems like they’ve recently decided to take things up a notch. The band, fronted by Manatees‘ Charlotte Watson and former Ex-Cult bassist Natalie Hoffmann, are in the midst of recording their debut LP and putting together a fall tour, but right now we’re plenty contented with their newly-release single on Goner. Memphis-fi recording quality, Urinals-esque hooks, barking gang vox…it’s got it all. Stream the a-side, “Fix,” below, and pick up the record from Goner here.

Sporting Lads

It’s no secret that we’re big fans of basically anything that Orville Neeley and his crew of Austin rock’n’rollers touch. The latest release from Bad Sports on Dirtnap Records — excellently titled “Bras” — sounds like a Dictators record featuring Paul Collins. It’s a direction for the band that we can’t wait to see in person. You’ll have the chance to join in on the good times at their upcoming show with our buds at Fond Object on July 5th at 7pm. Get there early and we’ll all hang. Hometown boys Waxed and D. Watusi are set to open the show, so if it wasn’t already obvious, it’s gunna be tite summer fun.

This is your excuse to extend the Fourth for as loooong as you want. Take it to the limit one more tiiiiiime

HIT IT AGAIN

infintiy cat
With the first volume of Hits From The Streets recently going out of print, the people over at Infinity Cat figured it was time for Volume II. If you aren’t entirely familiar with this release, it’s a 7″ compilation of Nashville’s newest and finest acts.
In this installment we’ve got songs from King Bitch, Study Hall, JAWWS, and Gnarwhal. So far, the only song that has been posted is Study Hall’s cover of Fairfield Parlor’s “In My Box“. If the three others are as gnarly as this one it should be a banger. Preorder it here!
