THE DAMNDEST THING YOU EVER SAW

nashville-1

TRICYCLE MAN – JEFF GOLDBLUM IN NASHVILLE

Where do you begin when writing single paragraph about Robert Altman? Of course he was easily one of most independent and influential (i.e. coolest) filmmakers in history, but even throwing those designations on him feels like shortchanging the guy. In the cultural and social clusterfuck that was the 1970s, Altman captured America with a twisted beauty and witty finesse unlike any director before or since.

All of this is to say there is a month-long Altman series opening at the Belcourt this weekend, and you need to do everything in your power to see at least a few of these films. Ferchristssakes, who else got John Phillips (Brewster McCloud), Leonard Cohen (McCabe and Mrs. Miller), and Harry Nilsson (Popeye) all to do soundtracks for his films? And all the cool footage from the airport, Parthenon, and Opryland alone make Nashville worth the price of admission. Full film list and showtimes here.

BLEEP BLOOP BITCHIN FLUTE

BITCHIN BAJAS

Few shows took us by more surprise last year than Bitchin Bajas at the Stone Fox. Classic situation: you start seeing a band’s name around, then you see their records on the wall at the store, maybe your friends even like them, but you never fully check it yourself. Then they come to town and you decide, “Alright, this has gone far enough. Too many people I respect are talking about these guys for me to not give them a shot,” and then WOW. It’s Kraftwerk, it’s Neu, it’s Pharoah Sanders all at the same time. Jesus…how did you know know? How did this slip by for so long? That’s Bitchin Bajas, and they’re playing at the Basement tonight. They also have a new 12″ EP out called Transporteur, and it’s wonderful. Check out a track from it below, purchase the record here, and please, for your sake, go see this band tonight.

HIGH CLASS MUSIC FOR LOW CLASS PEOPLE

mississippi_fuck-your-progress

Folks what’s up it’s Tuesday in USA and I’m here to tell you hi hello and bring you up to speeeeeed. Everyone knows that Mississippi Records is one of the best active American record labels. Their aim is true, and their passion for the under-appreciated and long-lost is necessary. So it’s no small news day when we find out the Mississippi folks are coming to Nashville this Thursday to spread their gospel.

A Cosmic and Earthly History of Recorded Music, hosted by our Third Man buddies, is a multimedia lecture which will span the entire history of recorded music and beyond. If “cosmic patterns that resemble music generated by stars being born and dying” and “musical patterns in the natural world that work on the same principals as music” are your bag (and my God, how could they not be??), this is not to be missed. Tickets are $7, a steal considering all the Mississippi releases you have already/eventually will soulseek, and are available here.
