PRAY FOR THE RAIN

JESSICA PRATT

Jessica Pratt’s 2012 debut caught us all by surprise. An unknown artist on an unknown label, she still managed to release one of the best albums of that year and earn the attention and respect of critics and fans alike. Last week she released the first single from her sophomore LP, On Your Own Love Again, and it sounds like this one will be just as good as the last. It’s a bolder sound than we’re used to hearing from her. Gone are the delicate picking runs and bedroom vocals. Has she grown into a more confident artist, or is she simply more confident of her place in the world? Maybe the record will tell. On Your Own Love Again will be released via Drag City on January 27.

COME BACK TO ME PLEASE

JACK NAME

A truly great record is one of the best gifts you could give this world. It’s honesty and hopefulness unconstrained. No one can touch it. We live in a time where freak viruses cause transatlantic terror and grey-haired poobahs spend their days trying to tell us what’s right and wrong. It’s enough to make you wanna hideout in your fortress of solitude, just you and your solid dudes.

Jack Name is a beacon of light in this heavy fog. He’s got a new record coming out called Weird Moons, and it is truly great. Truly, truly great. The first single, “Running After Ganymede,” was released a few days ago. Unwavering synth and drums provide the vehicle, Jack is the driver. Listen below for a taste. The record isn’t out til January 20th [courtesy of Castle Face], but make sure to catch Jack when he opens for Thee Oh Sees at Exit/In on November 15.

The Chosen Ones

Beth Israel – Dental Denial

Sup Halloweeeeeeners. So, as you know, there were a buncha free shows/parties going on Halloween with some of Nashville’s finest struttin their stuff, which is important and awesome and how things should be all the time. Equally important/awesome/how things should be is the good fortune of a sick touring band, which we had the chance to catch at The Cage on Friday night. Austin’s Beth Israel made their Nashville debut alongside local kings Study Hall, BZRK, Ttotals and newcomers Modern Convenience. Their live set sounded like a more American hardcore-influenced Total Control, who we’ve proclaimed our supreme devotion for time and time again, with stronger ties to Minor Threat than Suicide. Needless to say, we dug it and encourage y’all to check out the rest of the dates of their tour, which is headed up New Yak-ways according to their Facebook. Also, don’t forget to pocket their record, out on Parquet Court’s label — Dull Tools.  \\ YIP //

FUCK YOU, YOU’RE A TURD

THE CONEHEADS

THE CONEHEADS

The South might have given us country, blues, jazz, rock and roll, hip hop, and just about every other brand of American music, but we should never forget that it’s the Midwest who gave us PUNK. Somewhere in that flattened abyss of corn, windmills, and rust there must be a Fountain of Frustration, a crossroads unto itself where all the greats sold their soul not for the promise of technical ability, but rather just SOME form of excitement.

The most recent group in this lineage of punk royalty are THE CONEHEADS. Before we get into it, you should know that there’s next to zero information about these guys online. We know that they’re from Northwest Indiana [somewhere between Merrillville and Hammond, best we can tell], the guitar player is sixteen [so we can only assume the others are in close proximity], and they just released their debut cassette, Total Conetrol. Beyond that, your guess is as good as ours, but take one listen and you’ll see how much this shit rules. Weirdo Devo vocals, guitar that sounds like VOID through a DI box, and some truly shit-hot drums. We can’t find the cassette available for purchase anywhere, but you can download it in full here. While you’re at it, check out this live video from two days ago. Unreal.

DOO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN

A lot has happened since we last checked in with JEFF. They’ve got a new LP in the can, a new EP already out, they’ve toured across the country and back with local buds D. Watusi, Music Band, and Diarrhea Planet, and now they’re bringing it on home with a three-night stint at the End later this week. You’ll get different openers each night, and an anonymous source tells us we’ll even get a different set each night from the Brotherhood of Light.

Story time: I remember JEFF playing at the End with Hunx and His Punx and Shannon and the Clams in 2011. Their set came to a peak [as they do] with a pretty large chunk of the audience climbing onstage for the remainder of the show. It was a mostly familiar wild-style good time, but something definitely felt different. In that moment I thought, “I doubt I will ever be able to see JEFF play here again.” For three years, that prophecy has proven to be true, but wow. Look at that flier. What a groovy gift we have been given.
