FALL IN THE ASHES

ELECTRIC EELS

The electric eels are one of the most criminally overlooked punk bands in the history of the genre. They formed in Cleveland in 1972 and broke up before the Ramones even recorded their first album, yet they still had the foresight/piss-and-vinegar to sleep with married women, wear welding masks on stage, and get arrested at their first show. Make no mistake, these guys were first wave mid-west low-life scum, and forty years later, they’re still not getting the attention they deserve.

BUT that does not mean that no one is preaching their gospel, and proof of that comes in the news that Hozac Records has just released their first in what could be an entire series of electric eels releases. The songs are “Jaguar Ride” and “Splittery Splat,” and I swear to the Lort above, both are absolutely essential listens. I’ve hardly heard something so wild. Listen to the b-side below, and pick up the record from Hozac here.

AND THE WEEKEND SHALL BE FREAKIN’

It was designed by the mighty Josh Shearon, whose work you may know from the second Freakin’ Weekend poster, our third birthday party poster, and the design/layout of this entire website. Party on, Josh. Whatta groover. NOW, how about the rest of the deets?

THE WORLD IS COLD ENOUGH

GREG ASHLEY

When it comes to this whole contemporary “garage rock” thing, Greg Ashley is nothing short of a legend, but we don’t think anyone would blame you if you’ve never heard of him. As it goes with most legends, his career has been a roller coaster of self-administered ups and downs in terms of both the quality of his output as well as the attention it received. Most memorably, he was the main man behind the long-defunct Gris Gris, but he’s also released a handful of solo records including the masterful Medicine Fuck Dream. He’s got a new solo record now. It’s called Another Generation of Slaves, and it comes out tomorrow on Trouble In Mind Records. The lead single, “Awkward Affections,” is deceivingly dark thing all done up in electric organ and singsong bounce. Word has it that the album was recorded almost exclusively with jazz musicians for accompaniment, so we can only imagine (and hope!) that the rest of the record will offer more of the same vibe. Guess we’ll have to wait til we can pick it up from Trouble In Mind tomorrow to find out.

THE RUNDOWN – 2.17.2014 – 2.23.2014

Rundown

After all those dance parties, we feel like we shook our stuff more last week than we have in all the rest of 2014. This week will offer a welcome break from the dance floor with a few shows that are parties of the mind rather than the body. We’re talking Chris Forsyth and William Tyler at the Stone Fox tomorrow, The Black Angels and Roky Erickson at Mercy Lounge on Friday, and the lovely Angel Olsen at the Stone Fox on Saturday. Those are some shows so solid you gotta see at least one, but with how warm it’s supposed to be this week, why not go see all three? We are!

UPDATE: Two righteous shows somehow slipped through the cracks here initially. Cincinnati’s Oxford Cotton are playing at the End on Friday with locals Breast Massage and Ultras S/C, and Nobunny, the Hussy, Weekend Babes, and more will also be at the End on Saturday. Good shows abound.

VOICES OF THE SEWER

EX-CULT

After a couple months of stray rumors, details on the second Ex-Cult album have finally been released. Out April 29 on Goner Records, Midnight Passenger finds the band digging even deeper into their signature post-punk squabble, and with Memphis legend Doug Easley on the board, they sound tougher than ever. Listen to the title track below to see just what we mean, and pre-order the record directly from Goner here.
