IT’S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR! Freakin Weekend VI is coming on fast, and it’s finally time to drop some of the bands you can expect to see this year.  First, a few updates for you, angels of the Weekend – the dates of the weekend will be a bit later this year – March 12-14, and all night shows this year will be happening at Exit/In. Our buddies at Exit/In will be making 3-day passes available once again starting at a significant discount. From this Friday, February 13 through February 19, the 3-day passes will be available for a mere $40. After that time, they will jump up to $45, so don’t snooze! MICHAEL CHAPMAN

A twin master of songwriting and guitar playing, Michael Chapman was quick to earn his spot in the echelon of the British folk elite. By 1971, he had already released two records on Harvest [home to Syd Barrett, Kevin Ayers, and the Pretty Things], and he set out to record his third with producer Gus Dudgeon [known for his work with David Bowie and Elton John]. The songs and talent were there, and recording went smoothly. Unfortunately during a tour between recording dates, Harvest got a hold of the record, deemed it complete, and pressed it without Chapman’s consent. The result, titled Window, is what Chapman considers “a piece of crap,” full of takes that were only meant to be guide tracks for later overdubs.

Even still, the record is regarded as one of his best and certainly features some of his most-known songs, and next month, Light In the Attic will reissue it for the first time since its original release. Don’t fear the master’s seal of disapproval. Even “incomplete” Michael Chapman is still pretty, pretty good. Listen for yourself below, and pre-order Window here.

AMERICAN PATCHWORK

Even the most preliminary search into American folk music, be it old-time, blues, country, gospel, or otherwise, will lead you straight to the Lomax family. John Lomax and his sons Alan and John Lomax Jr. played a fundamental role in the documentation and archiving of American music and culture, and they did it for the larger part of a century. This Wednesday at the Stone Fox, we will have a special opportunity to view some choice selections from son Alan Lomax’s American Patchwork series. Filmed for PBS and originally aired in 1991, the project pull from the over 500 hours of footage captured during Lomax’s travels throughout the South and Southwest from 1978 to 1985. From bayou weirdos to real deal Mississippi drum and fife picnics, there’s a wealth of material here offering a glimpse into a completely different world. Following the footage, Alan Lomax Archive curator Nathan Salburg will perform a set of his own material. Don’t miss it!
