Sorry for missing ya last week, folks. We’ve been traveling around, and Arizona desert wifi ain’t what it used to be. There’s a big week ahead of us though with something to do every night. King Khan and the Shrines are at Mercy Lounge tonight while Black Panties are at Drkmttr, William Tyler celebrates his new record, Modern Convenience, at Grimey’s Tuesday evening and then White Reaper play the End later that night, the Happy Together Tour with the Turtles featuring Flo & Eddie returns to War Memorial on Wednesday [more on that later], Nashville’s Dead alumni Bad Sports play Betty’s on Friday, Jjakub’s tape release is Saturday, BARdo brings visual and performance art from 60+ countries to Drkmttr on Saturday, and Margo Price plays a free set downtown as part of CMA Fest on Sunday.

It’s no secret that we’re big fans of basically anything that Orville Neeley and his crew of Austin rock’n’rollers touch. The latest release from Bad Sports on Dirtnap Records — excellently titled “Bras” — sounds like a Dictators record featuring Paul Collins. It’s a direction for the band that we can’t wait to see in person. You’ll have the chance to join in on the good times at their upcoming show with our buds at Fond Object on July 5th at 7pm. Get there early and we’ll all hang. Hometown boys Waxed and D. Watusi are set to open the show, so if it wasn’t already obvious, it’s gunna be tite summer fun.
This is your excuse to extend the Fourth for as loooong as you want. Take it to the limit one more tiiiiiime
]]>
Crazy that BAD SPORTS released their self-titled debut on Douchemaster almost four years ago [which is now back in print for all you sleepers]. Since then, they’ve really honed the dial in and we’re stoked to get their third LP — BRAS — into our rotation. It’s a little more on the “fuck you” side of the street than their previous release, which seems to be pretty fitting these days.
BAD SPORTS pulls off what a lot of bands aspire to in terms of cracking out straight, no-filler records that only leave us wanting more. You know what you came for. They’re playing a killer party for the Dirtnap Records anniversary later in September and will likely be setting out on a proper tour sometime over the winter. Listen to a track and scoop that record.
]]>
A quick reminder to those who can’t make the trip to Memphis this weekend for GonerFest 9 – you can catch Nobunny and Bad Sports tonight over at The End. They’re making a stop here in town as a part of their current East Coast tour and it’s gonna be a nice warm-up before they hit the Hi-Tone later this weekend. Word on the street is that our friends over at Total BS Records will have some special colored vinyl editions of their Bad Sports’ Red Overlay 7″ – so come out and pick that up while you’re at it. This is also the first time we’ve seen Slammers on a bill in a good while – since early May with Sonny Vincent if we’re not mistaken. Anyway – get your Wednesday night party on over at The End tonight!

September is for real flying by. I mean, we knew it sort of would. September seems to always be packed full of shows that keep us out of the house and on the streets and before we know it – it’s Halloween. The last two weeks of this month aren’t going to be any different. With our big birthday bash this week and Hootenanny and some Nobunz/Bad Sports/GonerFest/Fox Fun action next week – we think it’s pretty safe to say that September 2k12 has been one for the books. We’d like to go ahead and apologize in advance for the lack of posts on the site this week. We’re going to be busy leading up to our show on September 20th at Zombie Shop and then we’ll probably be dead on the 21st. Nevertheless, here are some shows going down…

HEAVY TIMES
Well, here’s another GonerFest band that’ll be making a quick stop in Nashville around the same time [add that to the list with Spits, Nobunny, Bad Sports, Ex-Cult] Chicago’s Heavy Times released a pretty stellar first effort on HoZac last year with Jacker, an album that exhibited their ability to make some pretty catchy 90s-infused garage jams akin to those like Guided By Voices and Pixies and their Chicago brothers – The Ponys. They’ve readied a new single that should see release later this month – right around the same time that they’ll be stopping in Tennessee to play GonerFest and stop in Nashy. If you’re not making the trip out to Memphis this year – you can catch them on Friday September 28th at Betty’s Bar & Grill with Deluxin’ and Monsters On Television. Gonna be a party.

This year we’re getting a good bit of GonerFest 9 bands rolling through town before the actual Goner happenings. Not trying to deter anyone from hitting Memphis later this September – merely just stating that you could probably catch a lot of fun in Nashy and then more fun in Memphis and that’d be tite. A couple of bands that fall under this category are Nobunny and Bad Sports. We mentioned a while ago that the two would be hitting across the country together and that it’d bring them to The End on September 26th, but now we’ve got the full bill for you and it looks to be a total party. Slammers and OGG – two of our favorite local bands – will be the support for the night. We haven’t seen Slammers since early May when they played alongside Sonny Vincent at The Other Basement – so we’re extra excited to catch them back in action. You can get your tickets here right now – or just wait ’til day of.

THE BEST
We love when a good un-Googlable band crops up. The latest? The Best. Not the band from the early 90s with Keith Emerson, John Entwistle, Joe Walsh, and others – but the actual best. These four hail from Austin, Texas and – as you’d probably expect – there are a lot of familiar faces in the band. Orville Neeley [Bad Sports, OBN IIIs, A Giant Dog] and Max Vandever [Flesh Lights] got together sometime in 2011 and wrote some songs that quickly developed into a full set. So they teamed up with Jason of OBN IIIs and Caleb of Bad Lovers to form The Best. This past weekend marked the release of their debut 7″ on Twistworthy Records – a killer two song single featuring “Black Triangle” and “King of The Underground.” It’s a pretty powerful display of rock and roll different from those of the aforementioned bands. The Best have much more of a brutal power pop side to them. Head over to Twistworthy and try to snag a copy. It’s only initial press is a run of 300 – so jump on it! Orville gave us the greenlight for your ears to hear a bit of the new single – so check out “Black Triangle” below…
