THE RUNDOWN – 10.17.2016 – 10.23.2016

Rundown

Ooh wee we are just in the thick of October, aren’t we? Blood moon’s come, flannel’s out, Halloween is a week away, and the shows keep comin’. Wednesday gives you a slew of options between the obvious choice Lumpy and the Dumpers and the jam-off between Bob Weir at the Ryman and Phish at Ascend. Trouble In Mind recording artists OMNI play Queen Ave on Thursday while my dad’s favorite bluegrass dude (and truly a ripper in his own right) Larry Sparks is at Station Inn. Then it’s a weekend of album release shows with Savoy Motel celebrating their debut LP at a warehouse in Wedgewood Houston on Friday and Faux Ferocious celebrating their debut LP at Fond Object on Saturday. Fall delivers yet again on its tradition of new releases and that’s a-ok with us.

THE RUNDOWN – 9.26.2016 – 10.2.2016

Ah, the fall. It’s fleeting in Music City, but at least it’s finally here. You can get your kicks this week at Betty’s with ModCon kicking off their tour on Tuesday. Then, we’ve got a real treat at Third Man – Fred & Toody of Dead Moon are popping by after what we heard was a killer performance at Cropped Out in Louisville. Friday, you’ve got a choice between Midnite Snaxxx at the East Room or a house show on the west side - pick the rite vibe! Then, Saturday begins too many things to recount for you — basically there’s no shortage of people making opportunities available for you to enjoy, so you’d be crazy, just crazy!, to stay in and sleep on it. THE RUNDOWN – 9.12.2016 – 9.18.2016

Rundown

Dude today I got really good news. A friend of mine wants to trade me for an OG press Felt LP on Cherry Red. Haven’t shared that with anyone yet. Hi everyone! This week brings a refreshing crisp breeze slowdown in shows (shlowdown), but there’s some goodies out there. Moral Void kicks it off at drkmttr to get the week started. William Tyler plays what is sure to be a memorable show at the Belcourt on Thursday AND ALSO Ryley Walker will be touring through on his excellent new LP over at the East Room. Pick ya poison. Seasons are changing over at Infinity Cat, which is hosting a garage sale on Saturday in anticipation of their big move from Wedgewood-Houston to Woodbine. Then, Natural Child self-releases their hard-workin’, far-out new LP that same night. Get it right get it tight

A NEBULOUS CONCEPT OF FREEDOM

IMG_0803

THE BAREFOOT FARMER

Jeff Poppen is an organic farmer based about an hour and a half north of Nashville in Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee. You may recognize him from his Barefoot Farmer segment on NPT’s Volunteer Gardener show or you may have even seen him speak around town. His expertise lies in biodynamic farming, a holistic take on organic farming that focuses on the interconnected relationship of soil, plant, and ruminant life.

Jeff’s Long Hungry Creek Farm is a fairly successful operation. Among other things, they host their own CSA program, supply produce to the Husk restaurant in Nashville, and provide consultations for other farms in the area. While Jeff could have grown his farm into a larger, more profitable model long ago, he chose instead to stick with what he had, what worked, and to focus his attention on spreading his knowledge of biodynamic farming and encouraging more people to grow their own food.

As part of that ongoing mission, Jeff and company are hosting their Fall Equinox Music Festival and Family Campout next weekend. It’s a four day happening at his farm with live music, a ten mile bike ride, group yoga, workshops, community soup, and pretty much anything else you could need for a one-weekend Head Heaven out in the country. Jeff was kind enough to talk to us about the festival and his farm, and the conversation went everywhere from the Grateful Dead and Rudolf Steiner to fall gardening and the “nebulous concept of freedom” that drove him to start farming forty years ago. Read the full interview after the jump.
