SPINNING ALL DAY

We love Record Store Day as much as the next guy – but man does it put a hurt on our wallets. As we always try to do – we’d like to stress that record shops are open year-round. You’re all encouraged and more than welcome to buy records anytime you want, not just on Record Store Day [We only say this because sometimes we think it might be like Easter or something, ya know? Like… if you only go to church on Easter – what’s the point?] Especially here in Nashville when we’re fortunate enough to have more than a handful of great record shops. A couple of our favorites – Grimey’s New & Pre-Loved Records and Third Man Records – have just announced their initial plans to help celebrate RSD 2k12 with exclusive releases and performances from some of our favorite bands. We’re sure there will be a lot more announced and a lot more to talk about in the coming weeks, but let’s get a head start on things and jump into some stuff happening this year that has us excited for another Record Store Day full of going broke…

We used to think to ourselves, “How is Third Man going to outdo themselves this year?” But now we don’t even bother wondering. We just assume they’re going to do something crazy that’s never been done before or thought of because – well, to put it simply, they can. This year’s no exception and you can see the proof in that video up there. Mr. Blackwell provides a nice in-depth look at what TMR has to offer this year for RSD on a national level and what they’ve got special at their 7th Ave storefront. In a time where every record comes out in different colors and classic black vinyl is almost the more-exclusive version — we’re doing our best to not get jaded on stuff. That being said – a record with liquid inside of it is fucking unreal. Just check it out up there and we wish you all the best of luck in snagging a copy [and even more luck if you’re looking to get one of their balloon-launched flexies] No word as to what they’ve got lined up for activities that day just yet…

Our buddies at Grimey’s just unveiled some plans for their annual Record Store Day celebration that includes a lot of the familiar and a lot of the exciting. We all know nothing beats their back parking lot $1 LP and $2 CD sales – so we’re super stoked to hear we’ll get some of that action again. Last year a friend of ours found a copy of Fighter’s No Pain No Gain and then found a test press of it in the same box — that is some serious dream find shit [Fighter was like one of Nashville’s only metal bands in the early ’80s – check it out if you can find it] On top of that – they’ll have a stacked bill of live performances including sets from our favorite Bogus Bros, PUJOL, Langhorne Slim, Lovedrug, and a lot more. JEFF and PUJOL both have Record Store Day releases this year that will be available around town [JEFF’s Upstairs at United Vol. 3 – which you can check out right down there – and a new PUJOL 7″ from Saddle Creek off the United States of Being LP that you can see right up there] Aaaaand – they’ll have Mas Tacos over there. So pretty much we’re saying you can dig for sick dollar-LPs all day and eat tacos and listen to JEFF and PUJOL and do it with your friends on a Saturday. Dream baby dream.

There are lots more releases to talk about coming up this Record Store Day like a Nobunny treat from Goner, some classic Lee Hazlewood jams from Light In The Attic, a slew of sick reissues from Sundazed, more local releases, and lots lots more… so stay tuned – it’s gonna be a fun one
